Caddo smothers Canadian to remain unbeaten

A couple of first half turnovers slowed the Caddo offense a bit but the Bruin offense scored on its first two second half possessions in a 48-0 romp at Canadian last Friday.

The victory improved Coach Jeff Wigington’s squad to 9-0 on the season heading into this week’s district championship showdown against defending state champ Dewar.

“We are where we wanted to be 10 weeks ago when the season started,” Wigington stated. “We turned the ball over twice in the first half at their 1- and 15-yard line, which is something we hadn’t done all year. Hopefully, we got the turnovers out of our system because the games are going to get pretty big from here on out.”

Caddo continued to stifle opponents with a stellar defense that yielded just two first downs the entire night to the Cougars. They led 21-0 after one period and 34-0 at halftime before ending it on the mercy rule following the two third quarter possessions.

The Bruin offense showcased its passing game a little more than in recent weeks as senior quarterback Cale Wigington completed 11 of 15 attempts on the way to 169 yards and two touchdowns through the air.

With 191 additional yards on the ground, Caddo racked up 358 total yards in just over two stanzas.

Wigington was also the club’s top ground gainer with 119 yards and a pair of scores on only six carries. Bayler Black was solid as well, scoring two touchdowns and a pair of two-point conversions with 50 yards on eight totes. Noah Dry added two carries for 16 yards and Noah Carvel chipped in six yards on one attempt.

Jake McKay snagged both touchdown passes, finishing with five catches for 72 yards. Black grabbed four passes for 50 yards with Dry posting one catch for 27 yards and Carvel a reception for 20 yards.

Black and Dry each had monster defensive performances with 21 tackles apiece. Jase Counce had 17 stops, McKay contributed 15, Teryn Spicer tallied 14 and Dillon Speers had 10.

“Our defense continued to do what it’s been doing all season,” Coach Wigington said. “They were very stingy. We also got in a little more work in the passing game by design to get ready for this coming week and the playoffs. The main key was we got out of it healthy last week, which was vital for us.

“We are looking forward to the challenge this week. If we can take care of the ball and keep all the bullets in our gun, we will give ourselves a great opportunity. Until someone beats them in the playoffs, I think they deserve to be number one. Dewar has some new personnel but they do what they do and do it well. We just have to be consistent up front, get some stops here and there and get our offense going. It’s going to be an emotional game. We have bigger goals, but winning a district championship would be a big deal. At the end of the day, however, we have to get ready for a home playoff game next week either way.”
