Calera celebrates Homecoming with split

The Calera Bulldogs celebrated Homecoming by splitting basketball action with visiting Atoka on Friday night.

In the opener, the Lady Bulldogs started cold and couldn’t dig out of an early hole in a 45-28 loss but the Calera boys evened things up with a 62-39 verdict in the nightcap to even their record at 3-3 on the season.

Girls

A Karson Young three pointer was the lone Calera bucket in the opening frame as the visitors claimed a 9-4 advantage.

The Lady Bulldogs narrowed the gap to 19-15 at intermission thanks to five points apiece from Tatum Buck and Jaedyn Umsted in the second period. It was all Wampus Cats after the break however as they notched a 9-5 scoring edge in the third and added a 17-8 blitz in the final quarter to put it away.

Buck and Umsted totaled seven points apiece to pace the offensive charge for Calera with Young chipping in a second trey for six points. Jadelyn Pierce contributed five and Harlie Gardner added three.

Boys

Calera came out smoking hot with a 19-point first quarter surge to build a double-digit lead which they continued to add to throughout the final three stanzas.

Senior Logan Bumgarner pumped in a big 11-point flurry in the second frame that included three treys for a 36-17 advantage at halftime. It was 49-27 at the end of three periods.

Bumgarner provided most of his offensive production in the opening two quarters and ended with a team-high 18 points. Zaiden Craige also hit double figures with 12 points.

Lex Carlton contributed eight, Talon Rose and Gavin Chaffin posted five apiece, Hoff Weil had four with Xavier Mallard, Jake Daniel, Nathan Ford, Malachi Maytubby and Zayden Wright all notching two points.
