Caddo captures Madill Winter Classic titles

Strong performances for three straight days propelled the Caddo girls and boys to championships in the Madill Winter Classic last weekend.

The Class A third-ranked Lady Bruins easily dispatched Dickson (68-15) in round one before toppling Class 5A Durant (44-33) and Class 6A Deer Creek (60-49) to take home the girls title while improving to 4-0 on the season.

Caddo’s boys, who are ranked second in Class A, also ran their record to 4-0 after pounding the Madill JV (74-18) ahead of victories over Class 3A Dickson (63-54) and Class 4A Purcell (42-35).

Brilee Tyson earned Most Valuable Player honors in the girls division with Kayden Prince selected to the All-Tournament team. For the boys, Beck Willingham snagged Most Valuable Player recognition as Kale Brister was named All-Tournament.

Girls

It was a dominant show for the Lady Bruins as they ran away from Dickson in the tournament opener, racing to a 17-3 edge through the first period. They added 22 points in the second frame and held a commanding 57-9 lead at the end of three quarters.

Senior Emma Daniel came up huge with 20 points to pace four Lady Bruins in double figures. Kayden Prince added 15, Belle Hookom scored 11 and Kaylee Washington had 10. Brilee Tyson pulled down a team-best eight rebounds while scoring three.

The first big test for Caddo came in the semifinals and it didn’t look good through one quarter as Durant took a 12-5 lead. Coach Kolby Johnson’s club turned up the defensive pressure from there, yielding only four points in the second frame.

Washington and Hookom meanwhile hooked up for a combined 14 points to allow Caddo to outscore the Lady Lions 19-4 and take total command before intermission.

Washington connected for a trio of three pointers to finish with a team-high 14 points while Hookom also added double figures with 13. Prince tossed in six, Daniel scored five, Tyson had four and Harlee Taylor notched two.

Prince had the hot hand in the championship victory, including 10 of Caddo’s final 14 points to wrap up the title. She finished with a game-high 23 points.

Caddo held a slim 19-16 advantage through one quarter and gradually increased that margin the rest of the way, leading 31-24 at halftime and 46-36 at the end of three stanzas.

Two other Lady Bruins recorded double figures as Daniel drilled three treys on the way to 13 points with Hookom chipping in 12. Tyson also had seven with Washington scoring five.

Boys

It was all Caddo in the first round triumph as they cashed in a plethora of turnovers and erupted for 33 points in only eight minutes of action.

Nine Bruins all contributed in the scoring column with four reaching double digits led by Willingham’s 18 points on eight of 13 shooting.

Brister scored 14, Carson Robinson checked in with 13 and Jet Richardson finished with 12. They also got five points apiece from Dallas Williams and Corbin Stoner while Noah Bacon tossed in three and Ezra Melton and Ryland Howard each posted two.

In the hard-fought Dickson triumph, Willingham pumped in four three pointers and a team-best 22 points as the Bruins held off a late Comet charge.

Caddo was up 21-16 through one period, 35-25 at halftime and 49-38 following three stanzas.

Stoner hit a couple of treys and totaled 12 points with Williams also hitting a pair from long range en route to eight points. Robinson filled up the stat sheet with seven points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals.

Melton pitched in six points, Brister had four as Jake McKay and Richardson ended with two apiece.

Caddo needed a late rally in the finale after trailing 3025 entering the fourth quarter against Purcell.

Willingham keyed the comeback with nine points in the final stanza and fueling the charge as they outscored the Dragons 17-5 down the stretch. He finished with a game-high 16 points.

Brister added eight, Robinson scored seven with Stoner and Richardson tossing in four each and McKay three.
