Tournament championships continued to roll in for the Caddo Bruins and Lady Bruins last week as they swept to the Savanna Tournament titles in impressive fashion to remain unbeaten.
The top-ranked Lady Bruins toppled Class B2 power Pittsburg, 48-38, for the girls championship with the second-rated Bruins turning back Smithville, 67-33, in the boys title tilt.
Caddo’s girls wiped out Kinta (927) in round one and then dispatched Tushka (53-31) in the tournament semifinals. In the boys’ bracket, Caddo smashed Moyers (92-31) and Tushka (83-61) on the way to the championship matchup. Both teams improved to 7-0 on the young season.
Girls
The Lady Bruins wasted little time in dropping the hammer on Kinta in the tournament initial contest, racing to a 35-0 lead after one period. They extended that margin to 61-1 at halftime while not allowing a single field goal in the first two stanzas.
It was 82-4 at the end of three frames as Caddo coasted while hitting 48 percent from the field including nine three pointers and coming away with a whopping 35 steals.
Kayden Prince led four players in double figures with 22 points and five steals. Belle Hookom and Lily Braziell pumped in 15 points apiece with Hookom notching a team-best seven steals.
Kaylee Washington scored 11, Brilee Tyson and Emma Daniel had eight apiece, Kaia Bragg contributed six, Kimber Cahill notched four and Maggie Williams finished with three points.
Prince fueled the attack once again against Tushka with a massive 32-point effort that included 13 of 23 shooting from the field but Caddo didn’t break it open until after intermission.
The Lady Bruins held a 15-10 advantage through one quarter and it was 21-16 at halftime. They went on a 16-11 flurry that pushed the lead to double digits after three periods and pulled away from there.
Washington pitched in six points, Daniel had five, Hookom and Kiersyn Powell tossed in four each and Braziell ended with two.
Caddo rode big first and third stanzas to victory in the title tilt as they outscored Pittsburg by a 14-6 count in the opening frame and 16-9 in period number three.
Prince wrapped up Most Valuable Player honors with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Hookom cashed in 11 points, Daniel scored nine, Tyson had eight and Braziell posted one.
Boys
While the opening round victory wasn’t quite as dominant as the girls, it was definitely close.
Caddo scurried to a 24-4 edge through one period and exploded for 37 points in the second to claim a 61-11 cushion at the break. The Bruins had 30 steals and controlled the boards as well.
A trio of players reached double digits with Beck Willingham sparking things with 19 points on nine of 13 shooting and pulled down six rebounds.
Jet Rose tallied 15 points and Carson Robinson had 11. Kale Brister added nine, Dallas Williams tossed in eight with Kason Richardson finishing with six.
The Bruins got the offense going early and often with a 25-10 burst to begin the Tushka game and wrapped up with a 26-point fourth quarter. Caddo finished with eight three pointers, three of which came from Willingham with a game-high 31 points and nine rebounds.
Brister cashed in for 17 points and dished out five assists with Rose posting 15 points. Corbin Stoner just missed being a fourth Bruin in double figures as he ended with nine points.
Caddo jumped all over Smithville in the championship and put it out of reach early while building a 24-11 first quarter advantage that blossomed to 44-17 at intermission.
The Bruins hit seven treys with a wealth of balanced scoring. Brister and Willingham spurred the charge with 14 and 12 points respectively.
Stoner added eight, Robinson and Rose contributed seven each, Williams had six, Ezra Melton checked in with four while Jake McKay, Noah Bacon and Jase Counce all finished with two points.
