Trump does not speak for me

I am very proud to be a citizen of this country. Usually.

But much of what Donald Trump says on the world stage makes me feel embarrassed for this nation.

Most recently, he made a speech at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland in which he claimed that the United States has helped NATO countries in many ways but that NATO has never come to our aid even once.

The ignorance of such a statement, especially by the titular head of this country, is appalling.

He obviously doesn’t know—and most likely wouldn’t care if he did, since he seems to have no respect for the truth—that the ONLY time Article 5 of NATO’s charter (the part that requires all NATO countries to come to the aid of any one of them that is attacked) has been invoked was in 2001.

That was when the United States was hit by the 9/11attacks. In the ensuing conflict, Denmark alone lost more than 40 soldiers (Daniel Dales, “Fact check: Trump’s barrage of false claims in Davos about Greenland and NATO, www. cnn.com/2026/01/21/politics/trumpdavos- nato-greenland-fact-check).

In that same address, Trump repeatedly called Greenland “Iceland” and said that after World War II the United States stupidly gave Greenland back to Denmark.

Contrary to his statement, the United States has never owned Greenland, so it was not ours to give.

I guess when you don’t care about facts you can make up any nonsense you wish and at least some of your fans will believe it.

Donald Trump has been on the ballot for U.S. President three times now (2016, 2020, and 2024). I have voted against him three times.

Regrettably, enough other voters were swayed by his empty promises (to lower grocery costs and to secure the southern border of the U.S., while preserving immigrants’ rights) that he got into office twice.

Many of those voters have since been sorry they supported him.

But—unless Republicans in Congress grow enough of a spine to impeach and convict him, or unless his woefully unqualified cabinet members suddenly wise up and invoke the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution to end his presidency—we’re stuck with him for another three years.

Heaven help us. Trump has never been Rhodes-Scholar- brilliant, but his dementia seems to be getting worse as he ages.

And as we all watch his decline, I will keep repeating this statement as often as I have opportunity: “Trump does not speak for me.”
