Durant Kiwanis celebrates the new year with student awards

Kiwanis January Durant High School’s Senior of the Month is Tatum Dvorak. She has a 4.0 GPA qualifying her the DISD Superintendent’s Honor Roll, Oklahoma Honor Society, and National Honor Society. She placed third in psychology at SOSU’s Curriculum Contest and first in Extemporaneous Speeches at Speech and Debate Tournament. Dvorak also studies in a college concurrent class. She is secretary for DHS Key Club and class secretary for Student Council. Other club activities include Art Club, Academic Team, and Speech and Debate.

After graduation, Dvorak plans to major in biochemistry with a goal to pursue a career in veterinary science. She looks forward to volunteering with Circle K International.

Dvorak is already a dedicated volunteer through Key Club with children and senior citizens at Oxford Springs. She also attends meetings for the Durant Coalition to improve Durant.

“I am hard working and passionate about serving others,” Dvorak said.

She was awarded a certificate and gift card from Kiwanis for her achievements. Attending the meeting with Dvorak was her father Pete Dvorak and Key Club sponsor Alicia Farley. Dvorak will be considered for Kiwanis Durant High School Senior of the Year and a $1,000 scholarship.

Kiwanis January Bryan County Senior of the Month is Tori Allmon representing Calera High School. Allmon carries a 4.0 GPA and therefore is a member of Oklahoma Honor Society and National Honor Society. She is concurrently enrolled at SOSU. Allmon is a state qualifier for the Lady Bulldogs in cross county track and softball and is also a Bryan County All-Star.

Upon graduation, Allmon plans to continue her education at SOSU and then dental school. She hopes to become an orthodontic assistant.

She shows her volunteering spirit by coaching youth softball and Lil’ Dribbler basketball.

“My effort affects others, so I want to make it count,” Allmon said. “I also feel that it is important to invest in my community by working with kids.”

At a recent Kiwanis meeting, Allmon was given a certificate and gift card. Now she is a candidate for Kiwanis Bryan County Senior of the Year and a $1,000 scholarship. Celebrating with her were her parents, Bobby Allmon and Shawn Allmon as well as school counselor Macy Bryant.

Also at a recent meeting, Courtney Dukes, executive director of Bryan County Youth Services, spoke to Kiwanis about the new expansion of facilities.
