Commissioners approve resolution for sheriff’s election

Bryan County Commissioners Scott Goad, Justin Boone and Brandon Carr approved a resolution for a special election for Bryan County sheriff during a meeting Monday morning.

Sheriff Johnny Christian passed away due to a medical issue on March 28, 2025 and in April, commissioners appointed Joey Tucker, who was then the undersheriff, to serve as sheriff through 2026. Under state law, Tucker could not fill the remainder of Christian’s unexpired term.

The resolution states that the filing period for the election is April 1-3. The primary will be June 16 and if necessary, the runoff primary will be Aug. 25.

The general election will be Nov. 3 if candidates from more than one party file for the office.

There will be another election in 2028 for a full term.
