Durant basketballers split on Senior Night

Durant basketball teams headed toward the playoffs with a Senior Night split of district games with Glenpool.

The Lady Lions came out on the short end of a 56-49 decision against the league champion Lady Warriors but rebounded for a 48-25 verdict at McAlester in a makeup contest while wrapping up the regular season with a 17-6 record.

Coach Aaron George’s boys rode another stellar outing from Tashuan Williams in a 65-48 triumph facing Glenpool to improve to 7-16 on the year.

Next on the slate the Lady Lions host Class 5A regional action this week with the championship set for Saturday at 3:30. The Lions will travel to Tulsa East Central and face Edison on Friday night at 7:30.

Girls

A fast 26-point opening quarter by Glenpool dug the Lady Lions a hole that was too much to climb out of as they trailed 26-17 through one stanza. It was 36-29 at halftime and 45-33 heading into the fourth.

Durant responded with a flurry in the final frame but the comeback bid fell short against the district titlists.

Three Lady Lions tallied double digits offensively as Iyana Wilson pumped in 16 points, Ella Sorrels posted 15 and Aubrianna Freeman contributed 11. They also picked up five from Avery Blackburn and two by Anslee Morse.

Durant had a hangover into the McAlester outing and fell behind 12-6 in the first period. That’s when the Lady Lions flipped the switch with a 16-2 burst in the second quarter and 10-1 blitz in the third for a commanding 32-15 advantage.

Sorrels was the offensive catalyst pouring in 21 points while Freeman added 10.

Boys

Durant raced to a 23-7 lead in one of its best quarters of the year and was in control virtually throughout in the Glenpool finale.

Senior Tashaun Williams put on a well-balanced clinic with nine points in the first quarter, five in the second, four in the third and six in the fourth for a total of 24 points.

The Lions were in front 3518 at intermission and 48-36 going to the final stanza.

In addition to Williams’ tally, Durant had a pair of double figure scorers with Tyson Thompson pumped in 13 and Boston Browder 12. Malachi Valliere and Braylen scored four apiece while Leon Stone, Zac Ervin, Kenyon Johnson and Bear Bell added two each.
