Silo wins district titles, Calera drops pair

Silo boys got a last second bucket from senior Hayden Roberts to survive an Antlers upset bid and finished off a Class 3A district sweep of the Bearcats.

Calera boys weren’t quite as fortunate as they saw a fourth quarter lead slip away while dropping the second half of a Class 2A district sweep at Latta last week.

The Silo girls dominated their way to a 78-17 victory in the opener as the Rebels slipped by 61-59 after shaking off a disastrous first quarter.

Coach Niki Walker’s Bulldogs looked primed for the upset but went cold late in the 5146 defeat after the Calera girls fell behind early in a 51-29 loss in the opener.

The Rebels managed one lone point in the first quarter but steadily climbed back into it before taking a 38-37 at the end of three periods before a nip and tuck fourth.

The powerful Lady Panthers doubled up Calera 16-8 in the opening frame before extending the margin to double digits in the second stanza.

Calera put together its best frame with a 11-9 run in the third but only managed one point in the fourth.

Tatum Buck canned four three pointers on the way to a team-high 12 points. Taryn Niblett posted eight, Harlie Gardner scored five with Karsen Young and Jaedyn Umsted adding two apiece.

Latta 51, Calera 46 (boys)

Gavin Chaffin had the hot hand with four three pointers and a team-best 15 points but it wasn’t quite enough.

Latta held a 15-10 edge after one period and 31-23 at intermission before Calera rode tremendous balance to a 15-6 scoring advantage in the third. That gave the Bulldogs a 38-37 lead, but they couldn’t hold off the hosts in the final frame.

Craige contributed 11 points as Xavier Mallard scored eight, Talon Rose had seven and Logan Bumgarner finished with five.
