Silo girls and boys basketball teams each stayed alive in Class 3A playoff action last week while seasons came to an end for Calera and Colbert in Class 2A regional competition.
The Lady Rebels advanced to the regional finale before falling to eighth-ranked Anadarko (38-34) in a nailbiter while the Rebels bounced back from a loss to thirdrated Heritage Hall to eventually dispatch Anadarko (58-49) for the regional consolation title.
Both Calera teams remained alive in the regional with wins over Bryan County Conference rivals before bowing out one game shy of the consolation finals. Colbert boys dropped two straight in the regional as the Leopards bowed out against Panama (49-44).
Silo moves on to Area Tournament action at Madill this week with both teams needing three victories to advance to state.
Silo Girls
A fast start built a commanding lead and the Lady Rebels never looked back in toppling Heritage Hall (63-39) to start regional action.
Silo cashed in at the charity stripe by cashing in 20 of 29 attempts, holding the Lady Chargers at bay led by three double figure scorers.
Kynleigh Pierce fueled the attack with 18 points while Kamrey Hendricks added 16 and Mia Goodlow scored 14.
Scoring was a bit more difficult against Anadarko but the Lady Rebels dug out of a big hole to close within one point in the fourth quarter before the rally fell short.
Goodlow provided a balanced effort with 15 points as Hendricks tossed in 10.
Silo Boys
Following an outstanding first half showing, the Rebels saw Heritage Hall explode in the third period to pull away for a 70-37 regional opening win with Sam Mendenall’s 10 points the only Silo player in double digits.
Coach Adam Dworsky’s squad rebounded by throttling Davis (54-30) keyed by a red-hot scoring start from junior Cash Danker, who scored 17 of his game-high 19 points before the break. Doc Nuffer added a terrific showing inside with 10 points.
The Rebels set the tone immediately against Anadarko, canning four straight three pointers to begin the game while building a 20-10 lead after one stanza. The Warriors finally rallied to within five points in the final period, but Silo held them off to survive for their 18th win of the year.
Zane Sander fueled the offense with three early treys and 15 total points. Hayden Roberts posted 11 while Danker and Mendenall tallied 10 each.
Calera Boys
Facing elimination, senior Logan Bumgarner erupted for nine points in the first stanza to stake Calera to a 20-15 advantage and they gradually pulled away to knock out Tushka (63-51).
The Bulldogs were up 3224 at intermission and 4531 through three quarters.
Bumgarner connected for 16 points as Zaiden Craige checked in with 12 as Talon Rose and Gavin Chaffin scored 10 apiece.
Shooting dried up drastically in a rematch with Coalgate as Calera fell behind early on and could never recover. The Bulldogs were down 19-11 through one frame, 28-17 at the half and 38-26 going to the fourth quarter.
Bumgarner was the only Bulldog to reach near double digits with eight points.
Calera Girls
After a narrow loss in the regular season matchup just two weeks earlier, the Lady Bulldogs had the last laugh on Colbert by posting a 35-28 verdict in the elimination showdown. Calera was in front 9-4 through one period before Colbert answered to tie it at 14 at the half. Each team added three points to take it dead even to the final frame.
That’s when Harlie Gardner and Tatum Buck went to work by combining for 13 points as the Lady Bulldogs pulled away down the stretch. Gardner and Buck each finished with 11 points.
Alvia Love, Alexis Stogner and Kaylee Andrews all had eight points to spur Colbert.
Calera couldn’t quite pull off the upset against Panama (67-32) as the Razorbacks took a commanding edge at 41-10 going to the break.
Buck notched a teambest 16 points with eight coming from Savannah Mallard.
