DHS bats come out smoking in early victories

Coach Jimmie Wyrick’s Durant Lion baseball team got its offense in high gear for four victories in five games during the opening week of the 2026 season last week.

The Lions smacked district foe Tulsa Memorial by 28-2 and 27-0 counts to get things rolling ahead of a 9-1 loss to Bells in tournament action. They bounced back however by blasting Calisburg (9-0) and Blue Ridge (13-3).

Up next for the squad will be the Spring Break Southeast Shootout starting on Monday in Broken Bow.

In the opener of the twinbill run rules, the Lions got rolling early by exploding for 15 runs in the first inning and never looked back while pounding Charger pitching for 26 hits in just three frames. Eleven of the hits went for extra bases.

Holdan Robinson fueled the attack with two of the hits, including a double, and drove in five runs. Cole Robbins posted a double and triple and scored three times out of the leadoff slot. Jared Avalos, Lucas McClure, Graham McIlvoy, Colton Poore, Elijah McClure, Maddox Arnold and Jacob Jones all finished with two hits as well.

Robbins and Keyvan Dollar combined for the pitching decision with Robbins credited with the win as he struck out five of the six batters he faced.

Game two was much of the same with Durant cruising to 14 runs in the first stanza and 13 more in the second while adding another 15 hits.

Arnold had two of those, including a double, and drove in four. Robinson also drove in four with one hit. McIlvoy, Robbins and Lucas Mc-Clure also tallied two hits with McClure firing two scoreless, no-hit innings with four strikeouts on the mound.

Offensive production dropped considerably in the Bells outing as the Lions managed only a double from Avalos for their only hit. Dollar drove in the lone run.

Pitching put the clamps on Callisburg to allow Durant to get back in the win column as Robbins and Jackson Williams combined to scatter four hits with Robbins once again striking out five in just two innings.

McIlvoy provided the bulk of offensive production with a pair of doubles, scored once and drove in four of the nine runs. Avalos chipped in two hits and two RBI with Tyson Thompson driving in two as well.

They finished off the week by pulling away late in dispatching Blue Ridge as Robbins set the table with four hits and three runs scored while Robinson knocked in five with three hits that included a double and home run. Poore tossed in a pair of hits and Avalos drove in three.

Stephen Manhard worked the first two and two-third frames and Arnold followed with threeplus innings of scoreless relief on the mound.
