Lions win 2nd straight 5A powerlifting crown

Durant scored points in just four weight divisions but a dominant performance by the Lions at 181 pounds proved just enough to edge Coweta and claim the Class 5A state powerlifting championship last Friday in El Reno.

The Lions notched 44 of their winning 65 points at 181 as they managed to hold off Coweta by three total points in capturing the state crown for the second straight year.

Junior Conley Tiffie won the individual title at 181 with senior teammate Stephen Manhard just behind as runner-up to rack up the high point total as the DHS duo far outdistanced the rest of the field.

Tiffie posted a three-lift mark of 1,395 pounds, managing the top tally in his weight class in the squat (555 pounds) and bench (305 pounds) while also adding a 535-pound effort in the deadlift.

Manhard, meanwhile, notched 1,350 total pounds with a 530 in squat, 260 on bench and 560 in deadlift.

The Lions picked up 12 important points in the 132 division with Juston Andrus placing fifth with a combination of 925 pounds. He tallied 300 in squat and 175 on bench but it was his 450-pound performance on deadlift that earned extra points as the top mark of anyone in his weight class.

With every point vital, Jaxon Cuesta contributed a solid effort with sixth place in the 220 category as he had a three-lift total of 1,290 pounds (500 squat, 295 bench, 495 deadlift) while Draegen Baker chipping in a point with a 10th place mark of 675 pounds over two lifts in the 168 division.

In addition to the boys team championship, Durant also had a girls state placer in Camryn Eubanks, who scored an eighth place mark in the 198 division as she combined for 735 pounds (270 squat, 135 bench, 330 deadlift).
