History was made for the Silo High School track and field team with several placing performances in the inaugural Oklahoma Indoor Track and Field Championships held last month at the University of Oklahoma.
Junior Khloe Harris led the Rebel charge by winning the Division 3 pole vault by clearing the bar at 12 feet even, which also set a new girls’ Oklahoma high school indoor standard. Harris also added a fourthplace effort of 26.61 seconds in the 200 meters.
“They have been trying to strengthen track and field in Oklahoma and make it stronger,” head coach Maggie Rose said. “The indoor season runs January through February and gives people a good preseason prep for the outdoor season even though there are only a handful of meets. The goal is to get more competitions and add even more schools next year.
“Khloe set the indoor state record and is only a foot off breaking the outdoor record. She has been working extremely hard since her state runner-up finish last spring. She could barely clear 9 feet, 10 inches so that 12-foot mark was a tremendous improvement. I never thought we would have been able to have a pole vault state champion before this point. Silo has never had a girls team win a state relay medal or a boys relay team medal as well. I am very proud of their accomplishments and efforts.”
The Lady Rebel 1,600-meter relay team of Taylor Dewitt, Khloe Harris, Avery Childers and Kyndall Smith notched a bronze medal time of 4:22.47 while the 3,200-meter squad of Peayton Jones, Samantha Ranney, Childers and Dewitt posted a fourth place mark of 11:07.49.
Silo’s boys 3,200 relay foursome of Lewis Cross, Garett Coffey, Noah Green and Mykal French posted a bronze medal time of 8:53.65 for their top finish in the state event.
Lewis Cross added a fifth in the 1,600-meter run at 4:45.79 and Elijah Carterby checked in sixth in the 400 meters with a mark of 58.15 seconds. The Rebels had a pair of finishers in the 800 meters as Garrett Coffey ended up ninth by crossing the stripe in 2:09.22 with Cross just behind in 10th at 2:10.39.
