Strong performances by the Durant High School soccer teams resulted in a sweep of visiting Ardmore in nondistrict action last week at Paul Laird Field.
The Lady Lions notched a 6-0 shutout in the opener to improve their record to 3-1 while the Lions followed with a hard-fought 3-2 verdict as they remained undefeated at 4-0 on the year.
Both teams will start district play this week with rugged tests at perennial power Tulsa Bishop Kelley in games scheduled to be played at Tulsa University.
Girls
It was an early onslaught for the Lady Lions as they built a 5-0 halftime cushion and cruised over the final 40 minutes.
J.J. Patten got the scoring started by intercepting an Ardmore pass and booting it into the back of the net less than four minutes into the contest.
That only proved to be an omen of things to come as Patten headed in another goal off a Kirsten Collins corner kick with just over 10 minutes gone before adding a third for a first half hat trick by drilling through a 20-yard shot from the right wing with only 1:07 left before intermission.
Avery Blackburn and Elizabeth Thomas also notched first half goals in building the massive halftime advantage. Collins contributed a second half goal for the final Lady Lion tally. Maddie Turner chipped in an assist.
It turned out to be a quiet night for the Durant defense as they dominated possession offensively much of the contest. Maggie Martens posted three saves and Kadie Metcalf added a pair as they split time in goal.
Head coach Ryan Cook also credited the play of defenders Jaci Floyd, Katelyn Mauck, Collins, Riley Standifer and Daryan Eubanks.
Boys
The Lions fought off a tough test from Ardmore in order to remain unbeaten.
Joseph Flores was the catalyst for Durant as he posted a pair of goals along with an assist. Otto Baskin contributed a goal and an assist while Konner Sheba was credited with an assist as well.
Leland Hardwick was stellar in goal once again, notching 12 saves along the way.
“We played good defense and scored enough to win,” head coach John Wilmoth stated. “We left a lot of opportunities unfinished that we are going to have to learn to take advantage of.”
