Sheriff unopposed in election filing

The filing period for sheriff and other Bryan County offices closed last week, and Sheriff Joey Tucker did not draw an opponent.

Tucker was appointed sheriff in April 2025 following the death of Sheriff Johnny Christian. Tucker was undersheriff under Christian.

Under state law, county commissioners could not appoint Tucker to serve the remainder of the term, so he had to file for the office last week.

There will be another election for sheriff in 2028 for a full term.

“I want to take a moment to sincerely thank the people of Bryan County for the trust and support you’ve placed in me,” Tucker said, in a social media post.

He said he is humbled and honored to continue serving as sheriff.

“Bryan County is more than just where we live, its home,” Tucker said. “It’s made up of hardworking, proud people who care deeply about their community, their families, and each other. I love everything about this county, and it means more than I can put into words to be given the opportunity to keep serving and protecting it.”

County Assessor Kylie House also was unopposed, and she will be serving her first full term. Commissioners appointed her last July to serve out the remainder of Mike Hull’s term due to his retirement.

County Treasurer Prudy Sullivan-Holt also was unopposed.

In other election fillings, Lance Billings and Richard Nix filed for District No. 1 county commissioner, an offi ce currently held by Scott Goad, who did not seek reelection.

Incumbent Brandon Carr and Josh Cross filed for District No. 3 county commissioner.

The primary election will be June 16 and since all candidates are Republicans, the election will be settled during the primary.
