Strong efforts for DHS track in Ada Meet

Several outstanding performances highlighted a tremendous effort by the Durant High track and field teams last week as the Lions claimed second and the Lady Lions third in the team standings at the Ada Invitational Track Meet.

Junior Avery Sager continued her assault on the Durant record book as she broke the DHS school record in the girls’ 3,200 meters for the third consecutive week with a silver medal time of 11 minutes, 57.20 seconds. She also added a second-place time of 5:38.37 in the 1,600 meters as well as a third in the 800 meters in 2:31.30.

The Lady Lions had a gold medal effort in the 800-meter relay with the grouping of Ava Anderson, Xakayla Cox, Kaitlen Rush and Samiah Clegg cruising to a time of 1:47.86. Bailey Cross chipped in a first-place mark as well in the pole vault with a clearing mark of 8 feet, 6 inches.

Cox posted a personal best time of 63.59 seconds in capturing fourth in the 400 and also finished sixth in the 100 meters at 12.92 seconds. Samiah Clegg contributed a sixth in the 200 meters in 27.17 while Emma Sherrer was second in the discus with a toss of 105 feet, 9 inches.

Durant’s sprint relay unit of Clegg, Anderson, Rush and Cox tossed in a fifth-place mark of 51.32 seconds.

There were a host of personal best showings from the Lions as well, but the lone first place mark came in the 800 meters where K.J. Lowery took the crown in 1:59 even.

Conley Tiffie’s toss of 142 feet even was his best mark ever to end in second while teammate Caleb Simpkins also had a personal top throw of 138 feet, 4 inches to place fifth. Zachary Ervin added his best time of 4:40.87 for third place in the 1,600 meters and Rylan Avery chipped in a second in the 300 hurdles at 40.62 seconds with Damien Almos producing a sixth in 43.92 seconds.

Almos notched a third in the 110 hurdles as well in 15.77 seconds, Chris Hix placed fourth in the shot put at 44 feet, 11 inches and Josh Bull wrapped up fifth in the pole vault with a height of 10 feet even.

Durant placed in all four relay events once again, including a pair of thirds in the 800 meters and 3,200 meters. The 800-meter grouping of Jaythyn Edmundson, Josiah Trombley, Avery and Aiden Polk clocked in at 1:32.56 while the 3,200 unit of Lowery, Carter Kemp, Ervin and Kason Ford crossed the stripe in 8:26.39.

The Lady Lions’ 1,600 relay quartet of Karson Finley, Edmundson, Avery and Lowery placed fourth in a time of 3:30.79 and the sprint relay squad of Edmundson, Boston Browder, Mason Morgan and Polk finished up fifth in 45.06 seconds.
