Three Valley Museum to celebrate its 50th anniversary

Three Valley Museum opened 50 years ago in Durant, and the museum is celebrating its 50th anniversary from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday, June 20.

Admission is free and cake will be served at 4 p.m.

TVM is located at 401 W. Main Street in downtown Durant. The museum is non-profit and it houses a collection of artifacts about the history of Bryan County. It is named after the book Queen of the Three Valleys by Henry McCreary, which is about Durant. The museum is operated by the Durant Historical Society.

The museum’s exhibits include a small town exhibit area on the second floor depicting more than 20 businesses and scenes from the early 1900s, including an early law office, doctor’s office, child’s room, parlor, and general store. Other exhibits include area transportation history.

For many years, the museum had been housed in the basement of the former Choctaw Nation Headquarters on 16th Avenue until a grant was obtained to fund the move into the old Carpenter’s Machine Shop and other adjoining buildings at 401 W. Main St. Those buildings were refurbished and the museum relocated there in 2004.

Brianna Reed was named director/ curator of the museum in the spring.
