An 8-year-old boy who jumped into Lake Texoma on Saturday afternoon in the Willow Springs area in Bryan County died the following evening at Children’s Health Center in Dallas, Texas, the Marine Enforcement Division of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.
The boy, whose name was not released, jumped into the water just before 4 p.m., and went under a dock area and panicked, according to OHP. A bystander pulled the boy from the water and began CPR. He was then taken by Bryan County EMS to AllianceHealth in Durant before being flown to Children’s Health. OHP said the boy was not wearing a personal flotation device.
OHP received word that the boy died at approximately 5:49 p.m. Sunday.
In other accidents, 51-year-old Gary K. Oldfield of Fate, Texas, drowned after getting out of a boat into Lake Texoma at about 5 p.m. Aug. 7 approximately nine miles south of Kingston in Marshall County, OHP said.
He was traveling in a Crownline boat operated by 50-year-old Allen R. Fortner of Blue Ridge, Texas, when the vessel departed Buncombe Creek after a storm and then stopped in open water.
According to OHP, Fortner and a passenger got into the water and were hanging onto the back of the boat when another passenger fell into the water. Oldfield got in the lake to help, and he became separated from the boat because of high winds, and OHP said he went under and did not resurface.
The victim was recovered on Monday. Fortner and seven other passengers were not injured.
