Bruins blast Quinton in district gridiron opener

Coach Jeff Wigington’s Caddo Bruins turned in a dominant performance from start to finish last week for a 50-0 rout of Quinton in the district opener.

The Bruins accounted for 351 yards in just two quarters, 269 of which came on the ground to romp past the host Savages and improved to 5-1 on the season and more importantly 1-0 in league action.

They’ll return this week facing Savanna for the first of three consecutive home games in district action.

Last week was the second straight contest that the Bruins had little difficulty flexing their muscle against an opponent, scoring every time they touched the football on the way to ending it early on the mercy rule.

“We had a great week of practice and I was expecting a great game,” Wigington said. “That’s exactly what we got as we jumped on them early and the defense just played incredible. I told the kids that if they practice like that you see the results. We really challenged the kids to raise their level of play in district and they did just that. It was an all-around great effort and we need to focus on another good week of practice this week.”

Explosive plays on the ground were the story of the opening half as Cale Wigington and Boen Proctor each tallied several big runs.

Proctor notched a team-high 137 yards on eight carries, three of which went for touchdowns. Wigington also toted the ball eight times for 132 yards while scoring twice.

Wigington was efficient as well in the times he threw the football, completing six of eight attempts for 82 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Both scores went to Jake McKay, who pitched in 39 yards on the two grabs. Jake Green added three receptions for 37 yards with Noah Dry adding one for six yards.

The steady defensive effort, which posted a second straight shutout, was led by Jake McKay’s 12 tackles, including three behind the line of scrimmage. Miller had nine tackles with Proctor, Mullens and Green contributing seven apiece.

Dry chipped in a pair of quarterback sacks with one each by Proctor, McKay and Speers.
