Caddo went four quarters for the first time this season and rolled up a whopping 638 yards of offense on the way to a 49-34 victory over visiting Waurika last Friday.
The Bruins improved to 4-0 on the year and will have a bye this week before their final non-district contest of the year against Snyder on October 3.
“I was pleasantly surprised with the kids,” head coach Jeff Wigington said. “We were curious how we would do in the second half and what type of shape we were actually in because we had not had to play more than two quarters. The kids didn’t miss a beat.
“It’s safe to say we were in shape. Give it up to Waurika though. They had a good game plan. They were able to control the ball early and we turned the ball over two of our first three series. We finally got going and defense got us some stops. Waurika is a good squad that I wouldn’t be surprised to see in the playoffs.”
Caddo trailed 6-0 in the opening stanza and again 14-7 in the second frame before going on a scoring frenzy with 19 points to close the half with a 26-14 advantage. A dazzling catch and run by Jake McKay was the key explosive play that really triggered the charge.
McKay finished the game with five grabs for 132 and scored two touchdowns while quarterback Cale Wigington was nearly flawless through the air while completing 13 of 16 passes for a season- high 232 yards for the night.
Despite the big passing effort, it was actually the one-two punch of Wigington and Bayler Black on the ground that stole the show in spurring a massive 406-yard rushing attack. Wigington accounted for 201 yards on 12 carries with four scores on the way to 433 yards of total offense.
Black had another stellar outing as well, averaging more than 12 yards per carry as he toted the ball 16 times for 194 yards and one score as well as catching four passes for 70 yards. Noah Bacon tallied 30 yards receiving on four catches.
The Bruin defense put up massive numbers also as five players were credited with double figure tackle totals topped by 27 from Noah Dry. Black chipped in 18 stops with 12 from Bacon, 11 by Noah Carvel and 10 from Jase Counce.
“We threw it a few more times than we normally would like to,” Coach Wigington added. “We did a great job running the football with several explosive plays. We couldn’t do it without our offensive line. Once we got it going it was tough for Waurika to focus on one guy. That was good to see.
“There’s a few things that we can focus on and get better at. We are still going to focus on ourselves this week. We feel like it’s the right time to get a few guys healthy that are banged up, but still use this time to get better to pay dividends.”
