Bruins romp, prep for Homecoming showdown

The Caddo Bruins forced four turnovers and racked up 406 yards of total offense in just one half to blast by Savanna, 55-8, in district football action last week.

Now 6-1 overall and 2-0 in league play, the Bruins face a huge showdown with co-leader Keota on Friday night for Homecoming.

Caddo cruised to a 25-0 first quarter lead and continued to pull away from there before ending the game at halftime on the mercy rule. Much of the offensive explosion came through the air as they had seven pass plays over 20 yards with a near perfect outing from quarterback Cale Wigington.

The junior signal caller completed 15 of 16 attempts in the contest for 262 yards and three touchdowns. Wigington also rushed for three scores, toting the ball six times for 52 yards with Boen Proctor adding eight carries for 92 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also ran for a two-point conversion.

Caddo’s passes were distributed to six different receivers led by Jake McKay’s six catches for 94 yards and two touchdowns. Proctor tossed in 59 yards on four grabs while Jake Mullens snagged a pair of passes for 72 yards and a score.

Dillon Speers chipped in one catch for 24 yards, Jake Green had one for 10 yards and Hayden Bush contributed a catch for three yards.

The Bruin defense was stellar once again, just missing a shutout, but coming up with the four Savanna turnovers.

“Consistency is what we have been looking for and tonight we got it,” Coach Wigington commented. “The way the kids executed on offense and the way they were flying around on defense was a great game all around. I’ve said before it all starts up front and on defense Dillon Speers, Noah Dry and Ky Miller were all over the place. We came up with four turnovers and when you give the offense a short field that many times good things are going to happen.”

Not the Bruin focus moves on to Homecoming on Friday with a pivotal league showdown against Keota.

It will be the first Caddo gridiron meeting against Keota since 2015 and there will be plenty of postseason implications that include hosting an opening round playoff game.

Much like the Bruins, the Lions also sport a 6-1 record with their lone loss coming to topranked Weleetka, 60-14. Senior quarterback Beau McKenzie is the ringleader for Keota with a big offensive line up front.

“We are going to keep focusing on us, but we know who we’ve got coming up,” Coach Wigington added. “We are focused on continuing to get better. Keota has a great team, and it will be a great game. It will be a chance for a lot of people that haven’t gotten a chance to see us play to be there for Homecoming. We are looking forward to it.”
