Bruins romp in Tulsa, host Sasakwa this week

For the second straight week, Caddo put its foot to the gas early and never let up in a dominant 50-0 gridiron blanking of Tulsa Crossover Prep on the road.

The 2-0 Bruins will face another unbeaten foe this week when they start a four-game homestand against Sasakwa at 7 p.m. Friday night.

Caddo’s defense was ultra-stingy for the second week in a row against the Tulsa foe, not even allowing a first down while ending the game on the mercy rule at halftime.

“I was proud of the way the kids came out and got after it,” head coach Jeff Wigington commented. “We talked before the game about how we needed to come out and perform like a Top 10 team. We came out going fast and didn’t have one bust offensively or defensively. We only had one penalty, and that was on a facemask on the very first play. The kids treated it like a business trip and performed extremely well.

“Everyone was flying around and making plays. Teryn Spicer, Noah Dry, Jace Counce and Dillon Speers were all over the place defensively. Their offensive line couldn’t block us. We did a great job of gang tackling. Our defense is definitely playing as well as you could hope.”

While the defense was dominating again, the Caddo offense was following suit by scoring a touchdown every time they touched the football once again. The Bruins tallied 20 points in the first period and 30 in the second frame.

Dry notched a safety on a quarterback sack in the end zone with under a minute left in the half and Bayler Black returned the ensuing kickoff 54 yards to paydirt for the game’s final points.

Caddo’s offensive numbers were once again limited somewhat by lack of opportunities as senior quarterback Cale Wigington connected on six of seven pass attempts for 91 yards with three of those going for touchdowns. He also ran for 102 yards on eight carries with three more touchdowns.

Black tallied 55 yards on seven carries while Dry chipped in two totes for 17 yards and Jake McKay added one rush for seven yards as well as all six pass receptions along with scoring a twopoint conversion.

Dry led the defensive charge with 12 tackles with eight from Spicer, seven each for Counce and McKay and six by Black. Noah Carvell intercepted a pass.

This week’s opponent Sasakwa has one game under its best – a 46-32 triumph over Strother – and has appeared in the Class C state rankings.

The Vikings were 8-4 a season ago with sophomore Thad Harjo returning at quarterback after throwing for 1,900 yards and 27 touchdowns in his high school debut. Junior Titan Collins was the District Most Valuable Player last year as a strong all-around performer. He tallied 1,004 yards receiving and 11 touchdowns while also contributing 15 tackles for loss, six sacks and 11 interceptions on the defensive side.

“Sasakwa returns a lot of kids from a playoff team and will be the best group we have played so far,” Coach Wigington said. “It will be good to see where we stand. Hopefully we can go out and keep executing how we have been over the next four weeks at home.

“We are way below our yardage total from last year but that’s because our defense is playing so well. They have been giving us short fields every time and we have scored on every offensive possession. I like the way we are playing but know it’s going to get a lot tougher.”
