Over the past two years, Dewar has been the kingpin of Class B football and for good reason. The Dragons posted 24 wins in that span, including two over Caddo, on the way to back-to-back state titles.
Caddo head coach Chad Speer emphasized all last week the opportunity to make an impression on the rest of the state and see exactly where the 2026 Bruins stood early in the season.
Emphatic statement made. The Bruins controlled every phase of the game and in the process sent shockwaves across the state with a 38-6 throttling of the two-time defending champs at Bruin Field.
Senior Jake McKay set the tone with a 60-yard punt return touchdown for the first score of the game and the Caddo defense was suffocating throughout the contest, especially against the rugged Dewar rushing attack.
“We played well and had some kids that did a great job,” Speer commented. “We were still sloppy with too many penalties. We had 10 offensively alone and you just can’t have that. We overcame most of them fortunately though. We took care of the ball well and made some plays when things broke down. Bayler (Black) ran hard but we didn’t execute as well as I had hoped up front.
“Our defense was just outstanding. We controlled the line of scrimmage, shut down their run game and made them one dimensional. We allowed one long pass play on a busted coverage but didn’t give up points. That’s a tribute to the guys up front and our linebackers. We forced them into things they weren’t accustomed to doing and tackled very well. It was just a tremendous effort by the guys.”
Caddo built a commanding 25-6 edge at the half and then outscored the visitors 13-0 in the final stanza to put it away and improve to 2-0 on the season.
Quarterback Corbin Stoner had a strong performance in just his second career start, completing 13 of 20 passes for 196 yards and three touchdowns. McKay was the top target with five grabs for 102 yards and two more scores. Camarian King chipped in a long touchdown catch and finished with a pair for 64. Carson Robinson added two receptions for 22 yards, Jase Harrington had two for seven yards and Zander Nabors notched one for two.
Stoner also led the Bruin ground attack with 11 carries for 61 yards and two touchdowns while Bayler Black contributed 12 totes for 48 yards in the Bruins’ 124-yard rushing effort.
Black was also a stallion on the defensive side of the ball, posting 15 tackles and forcing a pair of Dragon fumbles. Jase Counce also returned to the lineup impressively with 13 tackles as McKay added 10 stops. Case Tipton and Cason Hull notched nine apiece. Robinson also tallied six tackles, including two of the team’s four quarterback sacks.
“I thought we exceeded the physicalness that we needed to bring,” Speer said. “It was great to have Counce back in there for the first time this season and he was a factor. Our locker room was very exciting after the game and we have a lot of things to feel good about. There’s still a long way to go though, but it was definitely a step in the right direction. We have to keep the momentum going and continue to play better each week.
“There’s mistakes that need to be corrected, but it feels a lot better correcting after a win than after a loss. We have to maintain our focus this week and not have a letdown. That’s our job as coaches to keep the hammer down and focus on our opponent at hand and not on what we have accomplished. It’s a short week and we are off schedule, so we’ll have to adjust to that. Our goal is to be playing our best come November and December.”
