Caddo outlasts Colbert for County boys crown

A massive first half performance sparked the Caddo Bruins to a 75-58 win over Colbert Friday at Bloomer Sullivan Arena and capture their third straight Bryan County tournament title.

The second-ranked Bruins erupted out of the gate, including a monster 30-point second period to bump their record 17-1 for the season. Coalgate outlasted Calera, 4336, in the tournament third place contest while Rock Creek downed Tushka by a 50-36 count for the consolation crown.

In the semifinal round Caddo blitzed Calera for a 73-32 triumph with Colbert posting a 40-30 decision against Coalgate.

Leading the All-Tournament selections was Caddo sophomore Beck Willingham with Most Valuable Player honors. Other All Tourney sections included Caddo’s Kale Brister and Corbin Stoner, Kyle Peebles and Alex Stogner from Colbert and Coalgate’s Trevor Talley.

Championship Caddo 75, Colbert 58

Despite Colbert holding the lead midway through the first stanza thanks to a strong start by Kyle Peebles, the Bruins finished the opening frame on a flurry for a 1910 edge.

A Peebles trey narrowed the gap to 19-13 before Caddo exploded for nine straight points in less than a minute to put the Bruins ahead by double figures for good. That was just the start of the massive scoring burst that helped extend the cushion to 49-22 at the half, spurred considerably by four three pointers by Dallas Williams.

The Bruins didn’t shoot it nearly as well after intermission but that was more than enough of a lead even with Colbert posting a 2316 scoring advantage in the third frame as well as 13-10 in the fourth.

Williams finished the game with six treys and a team-best 24 points to pace four in double figures for the Bruins. Willingham pitched in 16 with Brister and Stogner contributing 11 points apiece. Jet Rose tallied six, Carson Robinson had four and Kason Richardson added three.

Peebles was the catalyst for Colbert in pouring in a game-high 33 points, including six three pointers, but was the lone Leopard in double figures.

Adrian Clement scored seven, Stogner notched five, Rhett Burton had four, Evan Nunnery three with Bryson Moorefield, Zade Simes and Koby Bird all scoring two.

Third Place Coalgate 43, Calera 36

A miserable start in which they only scored four points in each of the first two periods dug the shorthanded Calera Bulldogs too big of a hole to climb out of.

Coalgate was up 9-4 through one quarter and 18-8 at halftime before Calera reeled off a 16-8 flurry in the third to narrow the margin to just two points. The final period belonged to the Wildcats with a gamebest 17 points to close things out.

Talley and Weston Lackey posted 13 and 12 points respectively to lead Coalgate. Logan Bumgarner topped the Bulldogs with 12 points while Gavin Chaffin scored nine, Xavier Mallad, Eason Humphers and Jake Daniel all had four as Talon Rose chipped in two and Malachi Maytubby one.

Semifinals Caddo 73, Calera 32

It took a bit for Caddo to get rolling offensively with a slim 14-11 edge after one quarter before extending that margin to 30-20 at the half. A 19-5 third quarter burst and 24-7 in the fourth put it completely out of reach.

Jet Rose paced the offensive charge with 16 points as three other Bruins also posted double figures as Willingham and Stoner tallied 14 each and 11 from Brister. Caddo also picked up six from Carson Robinson, five each for Williams and Jake McKay as well as two for Bayler Black Calera was limited offensively but got 14 points from Bumgarner. Humphers notched six with five each from Mallard and Talon Rose. Daniel ended with two.

Colbert 40, Coalgate 30

Amazingly Colbert went completely scoreless in the third quarter as Coalgate rallied for a 24-17 lead. The fourth stanza was a totally different story, however, as the Leopards erupted for 23 points to surge in front and claim the win.

Peebles provided the big spark in that fourth period, pumping in 16 of his game-high 23 points. Simes scored seven, Clement had six with Stogner and Bird posting two apiece.
