Caddo routs Velma-Alma to stay undefeated

Caddo remained unbeaten last week with a 48-0 thumping of Velma-Alma in the district opener.

The Bruins raced to a 28-0 first quarter lead before ending the game early in the third quarter on the eight-man mercy rule.

“Velma milked the clock and limited our possessions in the first half,” head coach Chad Speer commented. “We were able to rest some guys that were banged up a bit and we got a lot of kids some needed reps. I feel good about where we are going into this week.”

Senior quarterback Corbin Stoner threw for 198 yards and three touchdowns while hitting on 10 of 18 pass attempts. His top target for the night was Jet Rose with four catches for 111 yards and three scores.

Jake McKay added three grabs for 64 yards and a touchdown, Camarian King notched two catches for 21 yards, Zander Nabors tossed in one for 10 and Jase Herrington chipped in one for six yards.

Giving Bayler Black a breather offensively, the Bruins’ leading rusher was Stoner with three totes for 33 yards and two touchdowns. Jake McLaughlin carried five times for 26 yards.

Caddo got a special teams score when Carson Robinson blocked a Comet punt, scooped it up and carried it into the end zone. The game-ending third quarter score came via a Herrington 15-yard touchdown pass to Rose.

Lucas Rowland posted 12 tackles to lead the charge of five Bruins that tallied double figure totals. McKay and Robinson ended with 11 stops apiece while R.G. Workman and Brantley Carlile each notched 10. Bo Vaughn, Black and Case Tipton all had eight tackles as well.

The Bruins now set their sights on a showdown of unbeatens this week on the road at 6-0 Quinton with a chance to set themselves in prime positioning to claim the District B-4 title.

“Their closest game was 44-18 against Webbers Falls and they have mercyruled everyone else,” Speer said. “They have some really good kids that are big and they like to run the ball. The quarterback and running back are tough, physical runners. I feel like we are a bit more battle tested though. I think we can come out and hit them in the mouth, which nobody has really done against them, create some lanes and throw it around which they haven’t seen much. It’s going to be a challenge to tackle and not give up big plays on defense. We just have to continue to execute on offense.

“It will probably be for the district championship and one seed the way things look. It’s a huge game for us to set ourselves up for two home playoff games. We need to have a good week of practice and focus on football during fall break. Weather could be a factor as well.”
