Caddo throttles Calera, wraps up county crown

With the playoffs looming, Caddo put the finishing touches on a dominant run to the Bryan County Conference basketball championships with a sweep at Calera last week in rematches from the county tournament finals a month ago.

Caddo made themselves at home in the Calera High School gymnasium over the course of the two contests, scorching the nets for a combined 23 three pointers compared to just eight for the hosts.

The second-ranked Lady Bruins steadily pulled away during the course of the contest, sinking 10 of the treys, on the way to a 62-42 triumph to claim the league crown.

In the boys’ matchup, second-rated Caddo was on fire throughout while easily cruising to an 83-41 victory.

All four teams will be in regional tournament action this weekend.

Girls

Senior Jaycie Nichols was the main source of the three-point barrage, connecting for half the treys herself on the way to a monster 31-point performance.

Kayden Prince’s two first quarter three pointers helped stake Caddo to a 15-- 10 advantage through one period and the Lady Bruins kicked into overdrive from there with Nichols leading the charge.

The athletic Caddo catalyst sizzled for half her squad’s 18 points in the second stanza as the Lady Bruins built a 33-20 halftime cushion and she pumped in another 10 in the third in a 14-13 Caddo scoring edge.

Prince also reached double figures for the Lady Bruins with 12 points in the contest as Rylin Peevyhouse chipped in a pair of treys as well in scoring six. Belle Hookom notched four, Harlee Taylor and Jordyn Nichols had three apiece, Braylee Malone tossed in two and Brilee Tyson finished with one point.

Calera, who was playing without the services of stalwart Taylynn Conder, had three double figure contributors led by freshman Taibree Melton with 13 points. Carlaysia Brown posted 12 and Amariah McLaughlin pitched in 10.

The Lady Bulldogs also picked up four points from Emma Daniel and three by Jeslyn O’Dell.

Boys

Caddo set the tone with four first quarter three pointers, including a pair from Parker Bearden, and never slowed down after that.

The Bruins doubled up the Bulldogs 23-11 in the opening stanza and added 22 more points to make it a 45-26 advantage at intermission. Bearden then poured in 10 of his gamehigh 27 points in the third frame as Caddo continued to pull away with a 21-7 offensive blitz.

Kale Brister sank two treys on the way to 12 points as 12 different Bruins all tallied in the scoring column. Beck Willingham and Jet Richardson notched eight apiece as both hit two three pointers. Jake McKay and Keshawn Smith posted five apiece, Rance Richardson and Trevor Talley had four each, Treylin Henderson and Corbin Stoner scored three with Noah Bacon and Dallas Williams adding two each.

Calera was led by Zaiden Craige’s 10 points while Logan Bumgarner was credited with nine. Gavin Chaffin and Nathan Ford each posted five, Demarcus Dunn had four with Xavier Mallard, Eason Humphers, Zach Wesley and Ryder Smith all added two.
