Following a rare scoreless opening quarter and spotting Waurika an early lead, the Caddo Bruins bounced back emphatically last week in a 56-12 trouncing of the Eagles on the road.
Coach Jeff Wigington’s squad will definitely need to avoid that slow start Friday night with the defending state champion Seiling Wildcats coming to town for one of the premier non-district matchups in the entire state.
The Wildcats are 3-1 on the season with a trio of mercy rule wins against Snyder, Oklahoma Bible and Pioneer with their only loss a 28-22 setback at top-ranked Laverne in Week 1. Although they had to replace a four-year starter at quarterback, the Wildcats haven’t missed much of a beat with a junior-laden lineup that is headlined by versatile signal caller Blake Chain along with explosive playmaker Jazin Baker.
“It’s going to be a huge measuring stick for us to see just where we stand right now,” Caddo head coach Jeff Wigington commented. “Seiling has been one of the premier programs in the state the last few years and they have another explosive squad. It will be a fun test for a non-district game to see how we measure up right now.
“You don’t usually have non-district games against people from the other side of the state, but they were looking for a game and we were looking for a game. It should definitely be a great game for the fans.”
The Bruins needed to go four full quarters on the way to last week’s triumph, which could have been a blessing in disguise with Friday’s game undoubtedly going the distance.
Caddo notched 20 consecutive points in the second stanza against Waurika to take command, although the hosts got a late first half touchdown to trim the lead to 20-12 at intermission.
It was all Bruins after the break, however, with Wigington’s unit posting 22 points in the third frame and another 14 in the fourth unanswered to cruise to the victory.
Junior quarterback Cale Wigington completed a season-high 13 of 17 passes for 259 yards and four touchdowns in the game, including a 50-yarder to Jake McKay for a touchdown as the sophomore snagged two passes for 93 yards. He hit six of seven extra point attempts as well.
Jake Green proved to be the prime target for Wigington however as he notched nine receptions for 159 yards and three scores. The longest of those went for 47 yards and a touchdown while also adding a 70-yard kickoff return for a score. Noah Dry tossed in a pair of catches for seven yards.
On the ground, Wigington rushed just seven times but posted 121 yards and another touchdown. Boen Proctor had nine carries for 38 yards out of the backfield.
