Coach Rickey Teafatiller’s Calera Bulldogs remained red hot last week, posting four straight victories, including a 7-3 triumph over Durant, to run their winning streak to eight.
Class 2A Division 1’s second-ranked squad dispatched number four Latta, 3-1, to begin its impressive run before dropping Idabel (9-1) and Tishomingo (14-6) in the opening two games of the Atoka Wood Bat Tournament.
The Bulldogs followed with the Durant win which advanced them to the tournament finals, which were eventually washed out.
Gavin Chaffin was exceptional on the mound in the Latta victory, allowing a single run on five hits with three strikeouts and walk in a complete game gem.
A two-run first inning lead by Calera held up throughout as they took advantage of a pair of walks ahead of a Hazyn Applegate single.
Talon Rose got the pitching start against Idabel and fired a complete game three-hitter as the Bulldogs ended it in the fifth on the run rule.
Calera only recorded two hits but cashed in 10 free passes. Zaiden Craige posted a double and drove in a pair of runs.
The Bulldogs found a bit more offense against Tishomingo with seven hits but were still opportunistic as they capitalized on six Indian errors and eight walks. Jaron Varner led the charge with pair of doubles and drove in two runs while Logan Bumgarner also tossed in a double and two RBI.
Calera then finished the week with the solid triumph over Durant, spurred by Bumgarner’s complete game on the mound as the junior yielded just two earned runs, scattered nine hits and fanned 11.
Teafatiller’s club erased an early 1-0 deficit with four straight runs before the Lions notched a pair in the sixth. Calera answered with three runs to put it away as Darren Johnson and Craige came through with hits as they improved their record to 15-1.
Silo Softball
Although weather prevented them from competing for the title, the secondranked Lady Rebels caught fire in a massive offensive gauntlet that included at least 14 runs in every game last week, which resulted in five wins and strong outing in the prestigious Washington Invitational.
Silo belted Class B’s top-ranked Stuart (21-6), Class 2A second-rated Red Oak (17-5), Class 6A thirdranked Choctaw (15-14), 6A 13th rated Yukon (19-5) as well as Purcell (14-0).
Dylan Paddock had four hits, including three doubles, and drove in three in the Stuart triumph while Kostina Tubby led the charge over Red Oak with four hits, including a homer and double as well as three RBI.
The Lady Rebels played the dramatic card facing Choctaw in a wild backand- forth affair, scoring five runs in their final at bat to win it on Jayci Webb’s walk off single. Connie Tubby homered twice and drove in three runs in that outing.
A 17-run second inning eruption put the win over Yukon away early as Kostina Tubby smacked a pair of home runs en route to seven runs batted in.
Each of the Tubbys, Paetyn Garrett, Trinity Ford and Cache Atwood all contributed two hits in the run-rule shortened romp.
