Calera claims tourney title over Colbert

Calera rode a one-hit pitching gem from senior Logan Bumgarner to a 9-1 victory over rival Colbert in capturing the Calera Tournament championship last Saturday.

The Bulldogs avenged an earlier loss as Bumgarner went the distance in the run rule triumph, striking out six and walking a pair. He only allowed one run on a Trevor Jackson solo home run to begin the game.

After spotting Colbert the 1-0 lead, Calera responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame to take command. Zaiden Craige tripled to start the rally and scored on a Hoff Weil sacrifice fly. A Leopard error and singles from Jaron Varner and Hazyn Applegate pushed across two more tallies.

Calera tacked on two more runs in the third frame and four in the fifth to end it early on the run rule.

Bumgarner and Weil posted two hits apiece for the Bulldogs with Varner, Applegate and Talon Rose each contributing one hit and two RBI.

The Bulldogs rode to the finals with a 12-0 blanking of Caney and 3-2 win over Roff.

Cody Langley twirled a one-hit shutout in the Caney contest, striking out three during the run rule decision. Bumgarner fueled the offense with two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs. Maddux McCullar tossed in a hit and two batted in.

Calera scored all three runs against Roff in the third frame and held on from there. McCullar and Craige posted singles sandwiched around a pair of Roff errors.

Rose was the winning pitcher, yielding two runs and three hits over five innings. He struck out five and walked four. Gavin Chaffin earned the save with two scoreless frames of relief.

Colbert cruised into the finals with a 10-3 victory against the Calera JV and 9-0 blanking of Coleman.

Dalton Cummins scattered nine hits and struck out six in the complete game win in the opening victory. Jackson tallied two hits, including a triple, and knocked in two runs. Braxton Reese had a double and drove in two more.

Isaiah Lopez fired a one-hit shutout in the Coleman victory coupling six strikeouts and no walks.

The Leopards racked up 10 hits led by two apiece from Lopez, Hudson Bridgman and Parker Nesbitt.

Silo Baseball

Silo allowed four total runs over four games, with a dominant week that included its own tournament championship.

The Rebels toppled Wright City (5-1) in regular season action and then swept through Tupelo (9-1), Wright City (3-1) and Tushka (9-1) to capture the tournament title.

Cord Standrige, Aiden McCarty and Cannon Atwood each contributed two hits in the initial Wright City triumph. Atwood followed that up by leading the charge over Tupelo with three hits, including a pair of doubles, and drove in five runs. Zane Sander and McCarty tossed in two hits apiece with Jacob Wright earning the pitching win with three scoreless frames in which he allowed two hits and fanned one.

McCarty’s pitching was the story of the semifinals against Wright City as he fired seven perfect frames of relief with nine strikeouts for the mound win.

The finale saw Silo blitz the Tigers for four runs in the opening frame and five in the second. Nolan Northcott spurred the charge with two hits, including a homer, and drove in three. Ty Hatley also posted a pair of hits and knocked in two runs.

Blane Beauchamp tossed four strong innings, yielding one unearned run on two hits for the pitching victory.
