Calera girls fall in area finals, Silo girls advance

Silo girls used some late-game dramatics to survive while Calera girls and Silo boys saw their seasons come to an end in basketball playoff action last week.

The Lady Rebels struggled early against top-ranked Washington in a 58-28 loss but bounced back to topple Beggs, 45-44, in a nailbiter as well as eliminating Chandler by a 39-35 count in the Class 3A regional consolation finals.

Calera, meanwhile, rebounded through the Class 2A area tournament loser’s bracket, stopping Central Sallisaw (56-42) and Rejoice Christian (57-47) before seeing the Lady Bulldog season end at the hands of Howe, 53-28, in the area consolation finale.

The Silo boys came up short in a 55-49 loss to Bethel after staying alive with a 57-33 triumph against Lexington. The Rebels end the year at 14-14.

Silo girls will resume action this weekend in the area tournament at Ada, starting with Kingston in quest of three victories to reach the state tournament.

Calera girls

The Lady Bulldogs built a double digit first half lead against Central Sallisaw and rode a trio of double figure scorers to the win.

Calera was ahead 20-12 after one period, 37-22 at the half and 49-32 through three stanzas.

Junior Emma Daniel spurred the scoring attack with 17 points as Taibree Melton tossed in 16 and Taylynn Conder had 14.

It took a bit for the Lady Bulldogs to shake Rejoice although they led throughout. It was 16-11 through one period, 27-21 at halftime and 4434 following the third frame.

Conder had a monster effort in the paint with 24 points as Melton also reached double figures with 13. Daniel and Carlaysia Brown chipped in eight points apiece.

The Howe contest was a low-scoring battle early with the Lady Lions maintaining an 8-7 edge through one frame before extending the margin to 24-14 at the half. An 18-4 burst by Howe in the third put it out of reach for Calera.

Daniel had 13 points and Conder tossed in 10 to lead the Lady Bulldogs.

Silo girls

Scoring proved difficult against Washington as the Lady Rebels trailed 12-3 through one frame and 27-9 at intermission with the Lady Warriors pulling away through the final two periods.

Olivia Clark scored 10 and Kamrey Hendricks posted eight for Silo.

In the narrow victory over Beggs, the Lady Rebels survived a game-winning shot opportunity for the Lady Demons at the buzzer after Clark’s free throw with 12 seconds left gave Silo the lead for good.

The Lady Rebels trailed throughout the first three periods before finally grabbing the advantage in the fourth. Kyleigh Pierce pumped in 18 points and Cache Atwood had 12 in leading the way offensively.

Against Chandler, the Lady Rebels again trailed most of the contest until claiming the edge in the final stanza sparked by two three pointers from Brooklyn Redwine.

Pierce ended with 10 points and Redwine notched nine in the victorious effort.

Silo boys

The Rebels capitalized on a 17-point second stanza to forge a 22-all deadlock at intermission but could never take the lead until the fourth frame.

Coach Adam Dworsky’s club used a big flurry to finally grab a 46-45 lead with three minutes remaining, but the host Wildcats reeled off 10 straight points which proved decisive.

Sam Mendenall canned three treys on the way to a team-high 13 points as Blane Beauchamp also chipped in 12, adding a trio of three pointers as well. Cash Danker chipped in nine and Hayden Roberts had eight.
