Calera girls get initial win, forge Boswell split

Terrance Williams’ last second three pointer provided the boys game winner but Calera managed to rally in the girls contest for its first win in a hardwood split against Boswell.

The Lady Bulldogs rallied in the second half by outscoring the visitors in each of the final two frames for a 39-38 decision.

Boswell boys meanwhile, outscored Calera by a 16-5 count in the fourth to claim a 43-42 victory.

Girls

Boswell was up 13-10 through one stanza and 20-13 at intermission before Calera found an offensive spark behind senior Harlie Gardner, who pumped in a dozen points in the third as the Lady Bulldogs narrowed the gap to 31-28.

The hosts steadily closed in the final period as well, getting a big trey from Tatum Buck, while notching an 11-7 offensive advantage for the narrow victory.

Gardner posted a game-high 16 points with Buck narrowly missing the double figure mark with nine on the night.

Savannah Mallard contributed six, Taryn Niblett had four with Jadelyn Pierce and Karsen Young adding two points apiece.

Boys

After a tight first period, Calera seemed to take control with a solid defense and key buckets that included five points from Zaiden Craige, for a 21-14 edge at intermission as they limited the Scorpions to only four points.

The Bulldogs continued that momentum into the third period as they outpointed the visitors to carry a 10-point cushion into the final frame at 37-27.

It was a nightmarish final eight minutes for Calera however as they went ice cold offensively, getting only a Logan Bumgarner three-point play and Gavin Chaffin bucket for their lone points of the stanza.

That set the stage for the Boswell comeback, that included seven points from Williams, who had the final trey with just three seconds left on the clock. He was one of three Scorpions to tally 10 points.

Craige hit a pair of three pointers and led all scorers with 12 points. Lex Carlton pitched in seven for the Bulldogs in the opening stanza and ended with nine.

Chaffin scored five as Maddux McCullar, Hoff Weil and Xavier Mallard tossed in four apiece. Bumgarner had three with Eason Humphers notching a pair.
