The Durant High School track and field season finally got underway last week with the Lady Lions taking second and the Lions third in final team standings at the Marietta Invitational.

In the girls’ division, the only higher finishing team was Plainview, while the Lions checked in just behind Plainview and Sulphur on the boys’ side.

Sophomore Amira Woods was the catalyst for the Lady Lions, cruising to three individual championships in the season-opening event.

Woods claimed the 100 meter title in 12.48 seconds, took the 200 meter crown in 24.78 seconds and ran her way to a personal best 57.81 seconds in winning the 400 meters as well.

A trio of Lady Lions placed in the 100 hurdles led by Macee Hall’s third place mark of 18.22 seconds. Iyana Wilson was just behind in fourth at 18.30 and Laila Ahmed ended fifth in 18.38.

Hall was also fifth in the 300 hurdles, clocking in at 56.07 seconds, just behind teammate Skyla Conditt, who checked in fourth in 55.99.

Avery Sager ended third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:38.91, Kyra Dry was fifth in the 3200 meters in 14:32.95, Emma Gardner checked in fourth in the discus with a toss of 97 feet, 8 inches while Ahmed posted a second in the high jump at 5 feet, 4 inches.

Durant had a pair of second place showings in relay competition with 1600 meter foursome of Laynee Emert, Sager, Kaitlen Rush and Woods notching a time of 4:55.48, with the 3200 meter grouping of Sager, Dry, Zoe Jones and Emert posting a mark of 11:17.44.

Aiden Sager captured a pair of individual titles to pace the Lion efforts as he won the 400 meters in 51.35 seconds and the 800 meters with a time of 2:00.46.

Another gold medalist came from Kaydon Mimms in the 300 hurdles, posting a time of 41.02 seconds, with teammate Ivan Barrientos placing fifth in 45.88. Mimms also claimed second in the 110 hurdles by crossing the line in 15.38 seconds.

Sager tallied a second place in the 200 meters at 23.24 seconds while Braylen Lyday took fifth in 23.91. Cooper Hall registered a third-place heave of 114 feet, 3 inches in the discus as Shajen Davis added a fifth-place leap of 17 feet, 9.5 inches in the long jump.

The Lions’ 800-meter relay unit of Lyday, Mimms, Jaylon Saxon and Davis ended up third in a time of 1:35.06.

Next on the schedule for Durant is the Madill Invitational on Friday, March 29.
