Durant blasts Plainview in opening sweep

Strong performances propelled the Durant High basketball teams to 30-point season opening wins over Plainview last week before splitting district contests at Tulsa Memorial.

The Lady Lions blasted Plainview, 54-24, in the first outing of the year and followed up with a 47-30 triumph in the district lid lifter to up their season record to 2-0.

Durant’s boys cruised to a 57-27 win against Plainview but couldn’t duplicate that performance in a 67-37 setback to the Chargers.

Both Durant teams will be off for the Thanksgiving break before returning to the road at Coweta on Tuesday, December 3 for their next action.

Girls

Coach Will Robinson’s Lady Lions got eight points from Ella Sorrels and five by Iyana Wilson in an 18-0 scoring spree to start the game against Plainview and never looked back.

It was a 32-10 advantage at the half and 42-16 heading to the final period.

Wilson finished with a game-high 15 points for Durant with Sorrels also reaching double figures with 10.

It was a balanced attack from there with seven others getting in the scoring column led by Zoe Lee’s seven points. Sheraya Struble contributed six, Anslee Morse had five, Chloe Corley added four, Emma Green tossed in three while Avery Blackburn and Abrianna Freeman each tallied two.

Things got a little tougher on the Tulsa road trip as Durant trailed 8-7 through one period but Sorrels scored seven and Freeman pitched in five during a 12-6 second quarter flurry that put them ahead to stay.

The Lady Lions extended the margin to 34-23 after three stanzas while steadily pulling away from the Lady Chargers after intermission.

Wilson had a huge second half to pace three Durant players in double figures with 16 points. Sorrels checked in with 13 and Freeman had 11.

They also picked up three points from Morse with Corley and Lee adding two apiece.

Boys

Much like the girls’ opener, the Lions got off to a quick start with a 7-0 lead less than two and a half minutes into the game on the way to a 15-6 edge after one stanza.

Durant continued the surge with an even more dominant 15-3 scoring advantage in the second quarter for a commanding 30-9 halftime cushion. It was 45-20 through three frames with the Lions coasting in from there.

Balanced scoring was the offensive story as Kolton Mason hit a pair of three pointers on the way to 14 points. Ryder Jones also canned two treys to contribute 12 points as did Callaway Nabors.

Tashaun Williams finished just outside double figures with nine, Joseph Flores had six and Carson Robinson scored four.

Both Jones and Brady Thomann scored three first quarter points against Memorial but that proved to be all the Durant points as Memorial raced to a 19-6 edge.

The second period was much of the same as the Lions were outscored 20-9 by the perennial Class 5A powers to build a 3915 halftime lead and the Chargers rolled from there to start league play at 1-0.

Jones and Mason each pumped in nine points to spur the Durant offensive attack. Williams, Robinson and Jace Baley all had four points, Thomann scored three while Leon Stone and Landon Ringels tallied two apiece.
