Durant boys hold off Hugo to notch 4th win

Durant boys notched their fourth win of the season while the Lady Lions dropped a pair of low scoring contests in non-district basketball action last week.

The Lions’ victory was a 45-41 verdict over long-time nemesis Hugo in the weather-shortened Atoka Tournament.

Both teams will resume District 5A-4 play on Friday night with a visit from Pryor.

Offensive struggles were the story of the week for the Lady Lions in dropping a 28-19 decision to Ada and 35-24 battle to Madill, two teams which they defeated earlier in the season.

In the Ada contest, the Lady Lions held a slim 7-6 edge after one quarter thanks to a pair of Iyana Wilson buckets but watched the visitors rally to tie things at 11 going to half. The Lady Cougars doubled that scoring in the third period alone with an 11-3 flurry as Ella Sorrels accounted for the only Durant points with three.

The Lady Lions were never able to get over the hump in the final frame getting outscored 6-5.

Wilson and Sorrels contributed seven points each with three from Abrianna Freeman and two by Avery Blackburn.

Only three Lady Lions broke into the scoring column against Madill as Durant was in a 14-3 hole after one period and could never recover.

Madill led 17-10 at halftime and 22-15 through three stanzas and the Lady Wildcats added a 13-9 scoring edge in the fourth.

Wilson tallied 13 points, including six in the second period and seven in the fourth, but was the only Lady Lion in double figures. Freeman tossed in seven and Sorrels had four points.

Boys

A 76-42 loss to the Top 10 Ada Cougars began the week for Durant but they came back with the Hugo victory sandwiched between a 72-33 tourney loss to Ada and 47-31 against Idabel.

The Lions stayed with Ada in the home defeat until a 27-8 third quarter burst by the Cougars broke it wide open.

Freshman Tyson Thompson pumped in a season-high 12 points in leading the offensive charge for Durant.

Tashaun Williams posted nine, Malachi Valliere scored seven with three each from Leon Stone, Jayden Whitmire and Bear Bell. Zach Ervin and Brylon King had two apiece with Boston Browder adding one point.

In the Lions’ victory against Hugo, they got off to a solid start as Williams canned eight first period points in helping stake Durant to a 12-5 lead. It was a 19-13 edge at halftime and 35-25 following three stanzas as they held off the Buffaloes in the fourth.

Williams poured in 23 as the catalyst for the Lion offense. Browder sank three treys and finished with nine points. Thompson scored five, Valliere had three, Joseph Flores and Kenyon Johnson each chipped in two as King pitched in one point.
