Although success was limited, the youth-laden Durant High School wrestling team picked up some beneficial experience in a busy opening week of action.
The Lady Lions dropped a 54-18 dual verdict to Little Axe and then had a pair of high school placers with six junior high placers in the Tahlequah Invitational.
Durant’s boys units came up on the short end of a 6024 verdict to Plainview in the season opener and then a 51-30 decision to Little Axe.
In the Durant girls’ dual, the Lady Lions got their first points with an Olivia Crossland pin fall win over Alyssa Evans at 115 pounds.
Kenzee Trotter added another win at 145 pounds as she dispatched Raylee Gentry by fall and was followed by a fall triumph by Emmalee Davis at 155 pounds as well.
It was two other DHS grapplers that brought home placing efforts at the Tahlequah Tournament with Lillian Stilwell checking in second at 125 pounds as Camryn Eubanks added a fourth place finish at 235.
In the junior high division at the tournament, Durant had a trio of third place finishers with Brinlee Brooks at 82 pounds, Trinity Ross at 145 and Brooklyn Trobaugh at 155. Three others all placed fourth, spurred by Laiyla Almaguer at 102 pounds, Edelain Rodriguez in the 117-pound division and Isabella Oldham at 170.
Scoring was tough to come by for Durant in the Plainview dual as 18 of their points came off forfeit victories for Mason Cooper (120 pounds), Mac Barbush (157) and Aiden Polk (165).
Britton Trotter’s 53-second fall win at 175 pounds proved to be the lone match victory for the Lions.
Things were a bit more interesting in dual competition against a tough Little Axe bunch.
Kenlyn Pate and Canan Walls earned forfeit wins at 113 and 126 pounds respectively.
Barbush scored a fall victory over Layton Andrews at 157 pounds, Trotter was a fall winner against David Hensley at 175 with Evan Smith rounding things out with a fall verdict facing Bryson Byler at 215 pounds.
