Two more Durant High wrestlers will have a chance to continue on to the next level, joining teammate Addison Polk at the brand new program at Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa.
Seniors Asa Pierce and Bo St. Clair recently inked their scholarship offers as well with the Maverick program that will be looking to make strides in its inaugural campaign.
Pierce admittedly had been looking for a chance like this since the eighth grade when he began wrestling at Durant but never knew if the opportunity would present itself.
That opportunity came during a recruiting visit by Tonkawa coaches to see Polk when both Pierce and St. Clair caught their eye. The rest as they say is history.
“They saw what I had and I decided to sign there,” Pierce said. “Tonkawa is a small town which I like. The coaches were very down to earth. With it being a new program I think it’s cool to be able to be the foundation of something new. It’s something I started thinking about in middle school.”
The DHS senior plans to begin the trek toward a pharmacy degree and is expected to wrestle in the 164-to-174pound range.
St. Clair will be a lower weight class but Durant head coach Jim Taylor is confident he will have success along with Pierce at the college level.
“Both of them have come up through our program and it didn’t come easy for either one of them,” Taylor commented. “I’m glad they are getting this opportunity. When Tonkawa came down to sign Addison they got to see both of them work out and were impressed enough to talk to them and offer them after a visit.
“Asa was a pleasant surprise. He had some success his senior year and had a great future. Bo is every coach’s dream. He’s a kid you never have to get onto cause he will outwork everyone in the room. I am so happy for him because he wants to eventually teach and coach.”
