Lady Lions blast Hale for key league victory

The Durant Lady Lion soccer team erupted for its highest scoring outing of the season in an 11-1 triumph over Tulsa Hale last week to stay in the thick of the playoff chase.

Coach Ryan Cook’s squad dropped a narrow 3-2 verdict to Tulsa Edison in extra time to move their record to 6-4 overall and 2-3 in league play tied with McAlester for the all-important fourth slot in the standings. They are scheduled for a showdown this week with McAlester.

Durant’s boys couldn’t find the net in either contest while suffering a 4-0 loss to Hale and 3-0 decision to powerful Edison.

Girls

Complete domination was the story for the Lady Lions as they romped by Hale in building a 6-1 first half lead from which they never looked back.

J.J. Patten led the charge for Durant once again with three goals and a pair of assists as Kira Hoffman scored a hat trick as well with three tallies that found the back of the net.

Katelyn Mauck and Marigold Moore each scored twice while Kam White pitched in a goal and three assists.

Mia Ibarra, Maddie Turner, Avery Blackburn, Riley Standifer and Tiera Caren all contributed one assist. Kadie Metcalf had two saves in goal.

The Edison showdown was a battle throughout as Durant claimed an early lead on a free kick by Kirsten Collins before the Lady Eagles knotted the score before intermission.

It was Edison with the initial goal of the second half but Patten tied it off an assist from Blackburn and it remained 2-2 over the final stretch of regulation. The Lady Eagles notched the golden goal in overtime off a corner kick.

Maggie Martens had a stellar performance in goal for the Lady Lions with 15 saves on the night.

Boys

A scoreless battle through one half against Hale turned the way of the Rangers in the final frame as the floodgates opened with four unanswered goals The story was much the same in a defensive struggle against Edison before the Eagles punched through a goal late in the first half. The visitors picked another goal midway through the second half and a final tally on a penalty kick with five minutes remaining.

“I felt like we did what we had to defensively to give us a chance to win,” head coach John Wilmoth stated. “I was proud of the effort. In the second half against Edison we had several good scoring opportunities but just were not able to convert.”
