Lady Lions close district play with victory

After closing out district play with a solid road victory at Del City, the Durant Lady Lions continued prepping for this week’s Class 5A regional by splitting four contests last week.

The Lady Lions’ other win on the week was an impressive one as they toppled host Bixby, 8-6, to close out action in the Bixby Festival on Friday.

Durant will be on the road for the 5A regional tournament this week at Pryor looking to get back to the state tournament after seeing its string of appearance end a year ago.

In the 9-6 triumph over Del City, the Lady Lions took the early lead with five tallies in the second frame and tacked on four for insurance in the sixth before holding on in the final inning.

Singles by Kaitlen Rush and Anslee Morse were the key blows in the heart of the early uprising as they capitalized on three Lady Eagle errors.

Ryan Uber ignited the charge with a double in the sixth frame after Del City had trimmed the deficit to 5-3. Kenzie Trotter drove in the first run with a single before two more Lady Eagle errors and a pair of walks.

Emma Sherrer went the pitching distance, scattering nine hits and three earned runs while striking out seven and walking three.

Rush posted two hits to lead the charge with six others adding one. Those included Morse, Sherrer, Uber, Korbyn Robinson, Trotter and Kenzee Petty.

Offense was much tougher to come by in a 10-1 Senior Night loss to Sulphur as Daryan Eubanks had two of the squad’s six hits. They were only able to come up with singles from Rush and Morse in a 12-0 defeat at the hands of 6A Sand Springs before turning the tables on Bixby.

In that victory, Durant plated two runs in the second to go in front and added one in the fourth.

Uber and Trotter singles got the offense going in the initial flurry and it was a Uber solo home run that chipped in the third run.

Sherrer threw up scoreless frames in the fifth and sixth to give Durant the opportunity to take the lead and that did just that with a five-run explosion in the top half of the seventh. Sherrer helped her own cause with a two-run homer. Rush, Uber and Trotter all had hits in the inning.

Uber had the big game with three hits as Robinson and Trotter tossed in two each.
