Lady Lions get vital win in Memorial split

After a lengthy layoff thanks largely to weather the Durant Lady Lion basketball team got back on track Friday with a 49-42 district road win at Tulsa Memorial.

The Lions weren’t quite as fortunate in dropping a 68-37 verdict to the powerful Chargers.

That was only the start of an ultrabusy week that included five games in a seven day stretch this week, including a home game Friday with Tahlequah and Monday against league-leading Glenpool.

Girls

Having not played in more than two weeks, it took a bit for the Lady Lions to really get rolling toward their best scoring production in a month.

Senior Abrianna Freeman sparked things early with seven points as Durant snagged a 14-9 edge before Memorial came back to claim the second period advantage as well as a 25-23 lead at intermission.

That’s when the Lady Lions went to work behind the one-two punch of Iyana Wilson and Ella Sorrels. Each tallied six points as they outscored the hosts 17-6 to take control and held on from there in the final stanza.

Sorrels pumped in a team-high 16 points with Freeman adding 14 and Wilson reaching double figures with 11. They also picked up five points from Anslee Morse, three by Stacia Davis as well as Avery Blackburn’s two.

Boys

Boston Browder and Leon Stone each canned a first quarter three pointer but scoring was hard to come by overall as Tulsa Memorial built an 18-9 cushion through one.

Stone hit another trey while Tyson Thompson and Tashaun Williams also added a trifecta in the second stanza as Durant equaled the hosts with 11 points to make it 29-20 at the half.

The Chargers’ athleticism began to take over in the final two periods however as they notched a 13-6 edge in the third frame and erupted for 24 points in a monster fourth.

Seven Lions contributed points with Williams leading the way with 11 points. Stone scored eight, Browder had six, Joseph Flores chipped in four, Thompson and Kenyon Johnson notched three apiece with Malachi Valliere adding two.
