Lions capture home track meet championship

The Durant boys captured the team championship while the Lady Lions took second in the Annual Durant Invitational Track Meet last week.

In the boys’ division, the Lions edged perennial powerhouse Plainview for the crown while the Durant girls ended up behind only Kingston in the team standings.

The title run for the Lions was highlighted by four individual gold medal showings along with a pair of relay top marks.

In the 800 the team of Jaythyn Edmundson, Boston Browder, Rylan Avery and Aiden Polk clocked in at 1:31.25 while the 3200 unit of K.J. Lowery, Carter Kemp, Zachary Ervin and Kason Ford cruised to the title in 8:23.50.

Rylan Avery added a first in the 200 meters in 23.14 seconds, K.J. Lowery won the 800 meters in 1:58.03, Chris Hix took the shot put crown at 44 feet, 6 inches and Caleb Simpkins added the discus title with a personal best mark of 146 feet, 5 inches.

Damien Almos was fifth in the 110 hurdles, Avery notched a second in the 300 hurdles, Ervin was third in the 800 meters and Lowery ran a personal best in placing second in the 1600 meters. Conley Tiffie placed second in the discus, David Kobosky was fourth in the shot put, Hector Tormos added a fifth in the high jump and Josh Bull took fifth in the pole vault.

The Lions were fourth in the 400 relay with the group of Edmundson, Browder, Josiah Trombley and Polk and also checked in third in the 1600 relay behind the team of Browder, Edmundson, Avery and Lowery.

On the girls’ side, Avery Sager notched a pair of first place marks with a time of 2:30.91 in the 800 meters and 5:34.23 in the 1600.

The Lady Lion 800 relay quartet of Ava Anderson, Xakayla Cox, Kaitlen Rush and Samiah Clegg won the title at 1:47.59.

Cox added a second in the 200 with Rush placing fifth, Addison Daniel was fourth in the 100 hurdles, Leah Robison checked in fourth in the 300 hurdles, Clegg added a second in the 400 meters, Bailey Cross ended fourth in the pole vault, Emma Sherrer posted a second in the discus with teammate Dasia Lewis third and Addison Daniel placed third in both the high jump and long jump.

Durant’s sprint relay unit of Clegg, Anderson, Rush and Cox took second, the 1600 relay foursome of Sager, Clegg, Anderson and Cox checked in fourth and the 3200 relay group of Sager, Judi Free, Brooklyn Hill and Alyssa Reyes crossed in fourth as well.

A pair of school records fell once again for Durant in the Atoka Meet to close out last week.

Sager rolled to a first place mark of 5:25.21 in breaking the DHS record to win the 1600 meters on the girls’ side while Lowery won the boys 1600 meters with a first place time of 4:30.21 to break a 56-year old mark.

Clegg had a personal best time of 61.9 seconds to win the 400 meters and the 800 relay crew of Anderson, Cox, Rush and Clegg won the title in 1:48.38.

Robison claimed fifth in the 300 hurdles, Cox was fourth in the 100 meters and Rush ended fifth in the 200 meters.

The Lady Lion 3200 relay squad of Reyes, Free, Hill and Caitlyn Ortega took second with the 1600 unit of Cox, Rush, Anderson and Clegg finishing third.

On the boys’ side, Ervin set a new personal record in the 800 meters to finish second while Browder also took second in the 200 meters and Tyson Thompson was third with a personal best in the long jump. The Lions’ 3200 relay group of Hudson Phillips, Jared Osorio, Landon Emert and Mason Morgan wrapped up in third.
