Lions claim Little Axe powerlifting meet title

Durant’s high school powerlifting team ran away from the competition to a dominant championship in the Large School division at the Little Axe Invitational recently.

The Lions tallied 284 points with El Reno a distant second place at 189 while Woodward was third with 160 points.

A trio of weight class champions led the charge for the Lions with Justin Andrus at 132 pounds, Dragen Baker at 168 and Conley Tiffie claiming the top spot at 181 pounds. They also notched six runner-up efforts in adding to the big point total.

Andrus captured the 132-pound crown with a three-lift total of 910 pounds (300 squat, 165 bench, 445 deadlift) with Baker amassing a total of 1,055 pounds (405 squat, 245 bench, 405 deadlift) to snag the 168 title. Tiffie meanwhile checked in with a combined lift of 1,355 pounds (545 squat, 300 bench, 510 deadlift) to win the 181 division.

Leading the pack of runner-up showings was Carter Kemp at 145 pounds as he posted a combined tally of 860 pounds (300 squat, 215 bench, 345 deadlift). Daylun Andrews checked in second at 168 pounds with a three-lift mark of 960 (355 squat, 230 bench, 375 deadlift) as Stephen Manhard ended with runner-up honors in the 181-pound division with a grand total of 1,245 pounds (455 squat, 260 bench, 530 deadlift).

Jaxon Cuesta contributed a second place effort of 1,300 pounds (505 squat, 320 bench, 475 deadlift) in the 220-pound category, Cruz Gomez was runner-up at 275 with a total of 1,260 pounds (505 squat, 280 bench, 475 deadlift) while Jastin Stepp ended second at heavyweight with 1,255 pounds (485 squat, 275 bench, 495 deadlift).

The Lions had a trio of third place performances spurred by Brandon Cordell at 123 pounds as he posted 605 total pound (225 squat, 155 bench, 225 deadlift), Jahir Asencio was also third in the 157-pound division adding 950 pounds (350 squat, 225 bench, 375 deadlift) and Caden Pepperman rounded things out in the 198-pound category with 1,085 total pounds (420 squat, 225 bench, 440 deadlift).

Fifth place showings came from Jacob Jones at 220 pounds with a 1,045-pound total (345 squat, 245 bench, 455 deadlift) as well as Gaige Rocha at heavyweight with a three-lift tally of 1,135 pounds (440 squat, 275 bench, 420 deadlift).
