Lions win 5A powerlifting regional crown

Junior Conley Tiffie claimed an individual title at 181 pounds and Durant rode several high placers to the Class 5A Regional Powerlifting Championship last week in Hartshorne.

The Lions outdistanced second place Noble to capture the crown while qualifying several lifters for this weekend’s state competition at El Reno.

Tiffie led a Durant clean sweep through the top slots at 181, capturing the crown with a three-lift total of 1,400 pounds, which included 560 in squat, 305 on bench and 535 in deadlift. Senior teammate Stephen Manhard was just behind in second place as he tallied 1,300 pounds (530 squat, 280 bench, 490 deadlift).

The Lions had another regional runner- up in the 132 category as Juston Andrus posted a combination of 965 pounds (325 squat, 180 bench, 460 deadlift).

Cruz Gomez checked in fourth in the 275 division with a 1,340 pound total mark (545 squat, 305 bench, 490 deadlift). Jahir Ascencio added a sixth in the 157 category as he tallied 935 total pounds (335 squat, 220 bench, 380 deadlift) while Jastin Stepp was also sixth at heavyweight, lifting a total of 1,300 pounds (520 squat, 280 bench, 500 deadlift) as Gaige Rocha was just behind him in eighth with a 1,235-pound combination (500 squat, 290 bench, 445 deadlift).

Christopher Hix ended ninth in the 242-pound division at 1,205 pounds (500 squat, 255 bench, 450 deadlift) with a trio of Lions scoring points with placing marks in the 123 category. Those included Brandon Cordell in seventh with 665 total pounds (240 squat, 165 bench, 260 deadlift), Chris Becerra took eighth at 580 pounds (185 squat, 135 bench, 260 deadlift) and Ethan Garcia ended ninth with 425 pounds (115 squat, 105 bench, 205 deadlift).
