Rock Creek explodes past Achille for sweep

Rock Creek exploded for 75 points in each contest and rolled to a county basketball sweep of Achille last week at home.

The Lady Mustangs got off to a blazing start in cruising toward a 75-16 triumph in the opener as the Rock Creek boys followed with a 75-23 decision as both remained unbeaten.

Girls

Maddie Williams, Carlaysia Brown and Audrey Knight combined for 31 of the Lady Mustangs’ massive 38-point onslaught in the opening stanza as they capitalized on a plethora of Achille turnovers.

It was 38-5 through one period before Rock Creek extended the margin to 53-10 at intermission and 63-14 behind a host of reserves.

Ella Hamill led the charge for Rock Creek, pouring in 11 of her game-high 19 points in the second frame burst. Williams hit all 15 of her points in the first period with Mahlia Venegas also notching double digits with 11, picking up nine in the second quarter alone.

Brown and Knight provided each of their eight points in the opening frame, Jeslyn O’Dell tallied five, Lilly Torres had four, Kyllee Freeman scored three and Ana Ojeda added two.

Breona Lang contributed eight along with six from Izzy Wright and two by Elena Avila for Achille.

Boys

Sophomore Cameron Brown was a virtual oneman wrecking crew, helping stake Rock Creek to a 17-7 advantage behind 11 of his game-high 18 points.

That only proved to ignite the Mustang offensive charge as they outscored the visitors 21-6 in the second stanza and by a whopping 31-7 margin during a monstrous third frame that ballooned the lead to 72-20.

In addition to Brown’s big outing, Rock Creek had double-digit contributions from Jarret Barfield with 15 points and J.W. Edelen with 14. Jakeb Munholland, Ryder Ribera and Gavin Simmons posted five points apiece, B.J. Lyles scored four, Kelton Teal had three with Kenneth Ashby, Ruger Marlow and Liam Ribera each adding two.

Achille’s lone double figure scorer was Parker Coons with 12 points as Zentez Guess and Landen Worthington tossed in four apiece. Cason Shull pitched in three and Josh Williams rounded things out with two.
