Rock Creek gets tourney wins; Calera splits pair with Atoka

Rock Creek 52, Wilburton 41 (girls)

Laynie Knight scored seven of her game-high 17 points in a decisive first quarter explosion that put the Lady Mustangs on top for good in the Hartshorne Tournament consolation finals.

Rock Creek also got six points from Maddie Williams as they romped to a 19-5 cushion at the end of the opening period. The lead was still double digits at 26-16 going to the half and the Lady Mustangs were able to cruise home from there.

In addition to Knight’s big offensive performance, the Lady Mustangs also picked up 15 points from Meagan Davis, who tallied all eight Rock Creek points in the fourth.

Williams tallied eight points, Macey Weger scored seven, Morgan Bryant had three with Audrey Knight rounding things out with two.

Rock Creek 59, Hartshorne 44 (boys)

Rock Creek exploded with a 26-point second quarter and never looked back in cruising past host Hartshorne in the Miner’s tournament third place contest.

The Mustangs trailed 9-7 after one stanza before blowing things wide open during a sensational second frame in which they connected on four three pointers (including a pair by Zaiden Craige) and only allowed one field goal while outscoring the Miners 26-4.

A 16-12 third period scoring edge extended the cushion to 49-25 and Rock Creek coasted in from there.

Anthony Nichols led three Mustangs in double figures with 16 points as Craige tallied 12 and Blake Barrett added 11. Colby Hopkins nearly reached double digits as well, finishing with nine points. J.T. Talley chipped in seven and Weston Flowers had four.

Craige was selected to the All-Tournament team for his three-game performance, helping Rock Creek improve to 6-3 on the year. Their only tournament loss came to Missouri’s sixth-ranked Norwood.

Calera 58, Atoka 34 (girls)

The Lady Bulldogs, who started the season ranked 17th in Class 2A, tossed an opening quarter shutout en route to a 58-34 win that pushed their record to 7-1.

Coach Vernon Johnson’s troops led 13-0 after the opening eight minutes and steadily pulled away from there, building a 23-9 advantage at halftime and 38-21 through three periods.

Freshman Taylynn Conder poured in a season-high 21 points to spur the Lady Bulldog offensive charge. Emma Daniel also reached double figures with 15 points as Carlaysia Brown did as well with 11.

Amariah McLaughlin scored five as Macy Strahan and Kaysun Thralls contributed three apiece.

Atoka 57, Calera 54 (boys)

Senior Devin Brown was a one-man wrecking crew for Calera in the first quarter, pumping in 11 points to help stake the Bulldogs to a 19-11 edge.

He added seven more in the second frame but Atoka narrowed the gap to 30-25 at intermission. It was still a 42-38 Calera advantage heading into the fourth when the Wampus Cats hit the key shots down the stretch on the way to 19 points in pulling out the win.

Brown led all scorers with 24 points with Devan Walton also tossing in double figures with 11. Talon Rose added eight, Logan Bumgarner had six and Eason Humphers scored five for the Bulldogs.
