Rock Creek scores solid Homecoming sweep

Rock Creek celebrated Homecoming last week by posting a pair of impressive wins over Class 3A Valliant in building momentum for the upcoming playoffs.

The Lady Mustangs held on for a 40-37 triumph over the 14th ranked Lady Bulldogs in the first contest while the Mustangs followed by dispatching the visitors 48-43.

Rock Creek is slated to host Wister in the Class A district finals on Saturday night.

Girls

Coach Matt Ward’s Lady Mustangs, who closed the regular season ranked 17th in the state, set the tone early in snagging a 13-9 through one period spurred by Carlaysia Brown’s six points.

They impressively extended the margin as Maddie Williams powered in five points in a 15-6 second quarter flurry that extended the margin to double figures at the half. It was a 38-25 cushion heading to the fourth and it was just enough as Rock Creek managed only two points in the final stanza but prevailed.

Williams was the offensive catalyst with 13 points while Brown also hit double digits with 10.

Mahlia Venegas contributed sev- en points, Audrey Knight had six, Jeslyn O’Dell chipped in three with Ella Hamill rounding out the scoring with a point.

Boys

The Mustangs pushed in front during a low-scoring first frame but could never pull away from the athletic Bulldogs.

It was an 8-5 edge through one stanza with Rock Creek leading 22-18 at halftime and 35-29 at the end of three periods. Valliant made a comeback bid in the fourth, outscoring the hosts 14-13 but it was not enough as Kelton Teal and Cameron Brown had the answer while combining for 11 points down the stretch.

J.W. Edelen fueled a very balanced scoring attack for the Mustangs with 11 points. Teal and Brown contributed 10 and nine points respectively with Kenneth Ashby connecting on a pair of three pointers on his way to eight points.

The Mustangs also received four points from Liam Ribera, three by Jakeb Munholland, Jarret Barfield added two and B.J. Lyles tallied one point.
