Rock Creek took early leads and gradually pulled away in both contests to sweep Achille in Bryan County basketball action last week.
The Lady Mustangs posted a 42-28 win in the opener with the Mustangs following up with a 41-32 decision for their initial victory.
Girls
Maddie Williams tossed in six first quarter points to help Rock Creek take a 12-6 advantage and the Lady Mustangs carried an 18-14 lead into the half despite a pair of three pointers from Achille’s Blaire Burgess.
It was still a tight 26-20 edge heading into the fourth when Laynie Knight came alive with eight of her game-high 13 points as Rock Creek took control.
In addition to Knight’s effort, the Lady Mustangs also picked up double figures from Williams, who finished with 12. Macey Weger tossed in eight, Macy Weaver and Audrey Knight had three apiece while Morgan Bryant added one.
The Lady Eagles had just three offensive contributors led by Hermoine Hagood’s 10 points. Burgess and Gracie Holt posted nine each.
Boys
Rock Creek snagged a slim 8-7 cushion after one period which extended to 18-15 at intermission and 30-23 going into the final stanza.
Logan Crawford erupted for nine points for Achille the fourth frame but that proved to be all the Eagle points in the quarter as they could never get any closer down the stretch.
Freshman Cameron Brown fueled the Mustangs with 13 points with B.J. Lyles tossing in double digits as well with 10. Kenneth Ashby tallied eight, Jarret Barfield scored six as J.W. Edelen and Liam Ribera wrapped up with two points apiece.
Crawford rode the big final stanza to a team-high 13 points for Achille. Chey Hamilton notched 10 with Parker Coons adding five and Levin Crawford four.
Calera drops pair to Latta
An early season Class 2A showdown went the way of Latta as the visiting Panthers swept a pair of games at Calera last week.
In the girls contest, the Lady Bulldogs got off to a slow start and couldn’t make up the difference in a 41-33 defeat. Calera was right in the mix in the boys game, battling toe-to-toe with the Panthers while riding a huge scoring effort from Zaiden Craige.
Calera trailed 9-4 after one period in the girls’ action and 21-11 at the half before nearly doubling their offensive total in the third frame, but were still on the short end of a 32-21 deficit going to the fourth.
Taylynn Conder paced the scoring for the Lady Bulldogs with 13 points and Emma Daniel had a solid game as well with 10. Taibree Melton and Amariah McLaughlin tallied four apiece with Carlaysia Brown chipping in two.
Craige poured in a seasonhigh 26 points but a late Calera comeback bid fell shy in the boys’ outing.
Latta led 10-6 through one frame when Craige pumped in eight of the Bulldogs’ 15 points in the second to narrow the gap to 23-21. It was still a 38-34 edge for the Panthers heading to the final stanza when Craige added another eight but it was not enough.
Logan Bumgarner added 13 for the Bulldogs with Talon Rose posting three and Nathan Ford two.
