The Southeastern baseball notched one win in three contests while the softball team bowed out in its opener as each competed in the Great American Conference tournaments to close the spring season last week.
Coach Mackenzie Sher’s squad dropped a 9-1 verdict to 23rd ranked Harding as they were outhit 11-7 by the powerful Bison but finished with a 26-27 record.
Harding plated single runs in the first, third and fourth innings before Southeastern finally got on the board in the fifth stanza.
Sabetha Sands started the flurry with a single and raced to third on a one-out double from Iliana Olivares. Emily Simmons then drove home the run with a sacrifice fly to left.
Kennedy Morgan wrapped up with two hits with one apiece from Sands, Olivares, Simmons, Laci Larsen and India McMurray.
It was a tough tournament start for Southeastern baseball as well, falling to Arkansas Tech in a 19-5 round one run rule.
The Savage Storm led 3-1 through three and one half innings before the Wonder Boys exploded for five runs in the fourth, eight in the fifth and four in the sixth to pull away.
Wesley Mitchell’s two-run homer in the first frame put Southeastern in front and he added a solo bomb in the third inning as well.
Chase Keeton proved another tally in the sixth with a solo blast and the final score came via an Austin Thorp solo homer.
The Storm rebounded to eliminate Ouachita Baptist, 8-6, in their second contest, holding off a late Tiger rally.
Coach Alan Trayler’s unit continued to ride a plethora of long balls, taking a first inning advantage on a Brady Evans solo blast. Mitchell smacked a run-scoring double for another run in the third and Carter Olson followed with a two-run homer to make it 4-0.
Ouachita Baptist rallied to tie it after four frames before the Savage Storm put together another burst to go in front for good.
Kirk doubled home a pair in the sixth and Keeton knocked in another with a single. Nick Mueller’s solo homer capped the Southeastern scoring in the seventh.
The Tigers narrowed the gap to 8-6 in the seventh before southpaw Carson Abbott came out of the bullpen to slam the door, retiring eight straight batters to finish the game including four by strikeout. Cody Pfeffer was credited with the win, allowing one earned run on three hits over two and two-third frames as well.
Keeton posted three hits with two each from Mitchell, Olson, Gage Dollins and Kirk.
In the finale against Arkansas Tech, the Savage Storm allowed 14 runs in the first stanza as the Wonder Boys cruised to a 20-10 triumph despite only outhitting Southeastern 14-12.
Southeastern’s offense accounted for two more homers, one of which was an Olson three-run blast in the fifth inning and another on a two-run homer from Keeton in the seventh.
Mitchell and Keeton tallied three hits apiece with Keeton also driving in four. Olson had two hits and knocked in five runs.
