Wilkerson career high fuels Savage Storm

Local product Ethan Wilkerson poured in a career high 31 points and senior Chandler Dickinson added 24 to power the Southeastern Savage Storm to a 99-91 overtime win over visiting Northwestern last week.

That proved to be the lone Southeastern win of the week in Great American Conference action as the Savage Storm women fell to the powerful Lady Rangers and both squads dropped road decisions at Oklahoma Baptist to close the week.

In the Southeastern victory, Coach Kelly Green’s club shot a sizzling 59 percent from the field and needed every bit of it to outdistance the visitors, who began the game scorching hot from the perimeter while building a 45-39 halftime advantage.

Southeastern trailed by nine just six minutes into the second half before mounting the comeback with five straight points from Santiago Camacho Gomez along with an Ethan Scott trey that capped an 8-0 flurry.

The Savage Storm eventually claimed the lead with back-to-back Wilkerson inside buckets just eight minutes from the end of regulation. That edge swelled to as much at 77-70 before Northwestern knotted it up with five points in the final 65 seconds of regulation to force overtime.

Green’s troops kept the throttle down in the extra period, connecting on four of five from the field along with six straight free throws from freshman Jamal Drewery, four of which came in the final 38 seconds to ice their second win of league play while improving to 2-1.

Wilkerson sank 12 of 14 field goal tries and pulled down eight rebounds in the game-high scoring performance as Dickinson canned nine of 11, including three treys.

Camacho Gomez notched a double- double with 12 points and 13 rebounds as Scott also chipped in double digits with 10 points.

They put up another big number on Saturday night at OBU, hitting a blistering 51 percent from the field but 16 Southeastern turnovers led directly to 24 Bison points that proved to be pivotal.

Wilkerson had another big night, canning eight of 16 from the field on the way to 21 points and six rebounds. Three others reached double figures with 15 points from Scott along with 14 by Dickinson and 10 from Saxon McWilliam.

Women

Things didn’t go nearly as well for the Southeastern women as they never could get untracked thanks to poor field goal shooting.

They shot 36 percent from the field in the first outing and then just 33 percent in the second.

Northwestern’s tremendous size played a major role in the 64-55 win as the Lady Rangers capitalized on solid post play and held off the Savage Storm down the stretch.

The Savage Storm offensive punch of Kenzli Warden and Tori Kilburn gave them opportunities against the nationally-ranked Lady Rangers. Warden canned seven of 10 from the field and yanked down eight rebounds while Kilburn added 16 points on five of 11 shooting.

The shooting percentages were slightly better against Oklahoma Baptist but still continued rough as they trailed throughout the game, including a 26-point second period explosion that propelled them to a 73-60 triumph.

Warden came up big with a season-best 27 points and 10 rebounds while Kilburn narrowly missed a double-double, pumping in 17 points and nine boards.
