Durant Kiwanis awards seniors of the month

Kiwanis Club of Durant has announced the Durant High School September Senior of the Month, Andrew Alberda. Mr. Alberda carries a GPA of 4.0 and is also a college concurrent student. Andrew is a DHS Key Club member and Key Club Lieutenant Governor in the Texas Oklahoma district. He is a member of the DHS Band, HOSA, International Internship Program, Leadership Initiative at Georgetown University, and an Oklahoma Blood Institute Drive Influencer. After graduation, Alberda plans to pursue a pre-med major at a university. He hopes to find a university that offers strong community and strong preparation for medical school.

Andrew also commits time to enrich his school and community. He enjoys “seeing the impact that I can make on somebody’s life firsthand.” Through his involvement in IIP, he has seen the impact research has on providing clean water to at risk communities. His personal philosophy is best understood by a quote by Mahatma Gandhi, “…the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

Mr. Alberda was given a certificate and gift card and will be eligible to be named Kiwanis Senior of the Year. He was accompanied to the meeting by his mother Vanessa Alberda.

September’s Bryan County Senior of the Month is Brody Johnson from Legacy Christian School. Mr. Johnson earned a 4.0 GPA and is concurrently enrolled in college classes. His dedication and hard work extend beyond the classroom.

Brody serves as Student Council President and Fellowship of Christian Athletes team leader. After playing basketball for four years, he is team captain this year. Johnson’s sports awards go beyond Legacy School. He was All Tournament Team Captain and QCC All-Star Team member. He was given the Zefe Laborico Award and the Josh Morrison Award in Sports Performance. His future plans after graduation are to attend a university and medical school. He believes,” … going into the medical field I will be serving my community my entire life.”

Brody is a young man of many talents. His community service involves participation in many Serve Durant Days and is a “master griller” cooking hamburgers and hotdogs for SOSU Tailgate and First United Bank events.

As September’s honoree, Johnson was awarded a gift card and certificate, making him eligible for consideration in May for Kiwanis Bryan Student of the Year. Attending the event with Brody were his parents Brandon and Tammy Johnson, brother Breydon, and Tamara Lindley, school counselor.
