On Saturday, May 18 the Caddo Community Association held their annual end of school bash. This year’s event, “Firefly Boogie” brought residents and out of towners together for a fun time of visiting with friends, meeting new ones and dancing the night away. According to Vesta McKee Baker, vice president of CCA, the event started as a picnic at Boland Park in Caddo. She said about 3 or 4 years ago, they revived the tradition of the street dance.
The community group created the perfect small town community event as road blocks were set up on a section of Buffalo Street to create a safe and fun family event. In addition to dancing, attendees could enjoy refreshments from local vendors and take a break on downtown benches or the seating lining the street dance activities.
At the welcome table, CCA president Misty Tally and other members passed out free glow jewelry to attendees brightening the night as dancers boogied to the sounds provided by local DJ Austin Hider.
Durant resident Jody Nod said they came to Caddo for an event held at Harbinger’s Beer Company but following that decided to stay and attend their first street dance in Caddo. She said it looked like everyone was having a lot of fun.
Georgana McKay, a Caddo resident who has attended other street dances, said she comes with her family to hang out and listen to the music. She said it is always a nice event to attend.
According to Baker, the Summer Bash is one of several annual events the CCA provides for their community. For example, alongside local churches, they co-sponsor an 80’s and 90’s dance the first Saturday in June, they sponsor a barbecue lunch following the rodeo parade during the Caddo rodeo weekend in July, and jointly sponsor a party with Santa Claus with Masonic Lodge #3.
The Caddo Community Association is a small group of volunteers who provide family events and activities with the goal of keeping the spirit and camaraderie of small town living strong in their community.
